I work in the Public Sector, it's not all fun and games. I suppose it is more relaxed, but I don't think thats because we are inherrently bludgers, but more the fact that we loose the ability to have independant thought. We do what we're told, no more, no less, and if we fail, well, we bascially can't get fired. And thats the downside to working in the public sector, you get job security, but you are so constrained by the systems, rules and regulations that are in place. Case in point, my old section has a fucking harding working staff member, who has gone from APS1 to APS3 quite quickly, but they are non-ongoing (in other words, no job security), in the private sector this person would be given a permenant job without question, in the public sector, they have to apply for a permennt job and hope that they get picked over the hundreds of other people who apply. Her being an awesome employee right now is no garuntee of a proper job in the future.

So basically, if you have a lot of ideas for how to change things, don't join the public sector, you';ll just get sitfled.

The APS is a good place to start your career, the working conditions are fairly flexible and managers are more often than not friendly and supportive. You need to be careful in choosing your department though. Some departments have rancorous corporate cultures, much like some private sector organisations, and other, often larger departments, have very irritating hierarchies that cause projects to move like molasses. The only real way to find out whether you'll enjoy or not is to suck it and see.

Seriously how did you folk go about getting these positions? What sort of positions did you get? I've been recently told that my contract at the warehouse won't be renewed because K-mart is going to hire a different recruitment agency at $6 an hour less, This is my third year of a five year double degree so I'm started to ponder whether I might begin to fill the criteria for some public service jobs. Plus frankly I'd like to do something that doesn't so much involve four am starts for a while and doesn't involve frequently working outside in the rain at 6am. Will be applying for retail positions just as something different but would like to look at what is possible in the public service.
