i read them years ago when i was 10-11 and thought they were awesome, but i don't know if you'd like them as much at your present age. John Marsden was my favourite author as a young kid

I loved the series, I was still young and had a great imagination.

EDIT: This series made me a patriot, haha. I didn't give a shit about Australia before I read the series, but it motivated me to go 'what would I do if I were in their position?' and agree with their decisions. Must read for all Aussie school kids imo.

Amazing books, I read them first in year six? I think. I'm a big fan of John Marsden in general, and these are really incredible especially in terms of the characters.

I am hugely nervous at the prospect of a movie, it's easily my favourite novel series and the idea of someone messing with it makes me nervous. Heh.

basically a group of teens who go camping and while they're camping an asian country takes over Australia and then they try rescue loved ones, save their properties, fight against the new country. Then there's the personal side - dealing with death, love, friendships etc..

sorry i gave a pretty unenthusiastic summary, but the series is quite good it makes you feel as though you're right there and probably kinda realistic for the given situation

They never stated what country, I thought of it as being a middle eastern/european country. It was open to interpretation

ok...i got the first book in the series on friday and finished it in the early hours on saturday morning! i loved it that much, its not a typical book that i would pick up but im soo glad that i did...im currently searching for book no. 2

I remember in Primary school the books had a little yellow sticker on them which meant they were restricted to year 5 and 6 only. Although, they were just kept on the back wall in the library. So in Library sessions we used to get Dead of the Night, and pass it around to read the sex scene. We thought we were so hardcore.

Great books I think. They are aimed at a young teen audience and they come across well. The way he tells the story you can believe the decisions the characters make, and how they get to where they are.

The made numerous subtle references to the invaders. I would think they would be Asian or maybe Eastern European. To me, its sort of implied they are quite close to Australia (the invaders) because the US seems to view it as a southern hemisphere kind of deal. I'm pretty sure (but not positive - its been ages) that they refer to the language as being distinctly different. Fi seems to know a few languages (or maybe just French) and she doesn't know it at all.

They also refer to them looking different I think - and there is never a real moment where people can't tell by appearance between the invaders and the Australians (which if they were European it would be near impossible to tell). Also, when hearing the invaders speak English it does not have a typical European rhythm, like how they arrange sentences and words. It also insinuates that where the invaders come from is quite crowded, with them happily living with multiple families in a house.

I guess it could be a South American country but on the mannerisms and behaviour I would think not.

John Marsden deliberately did not say who they were. I think its safe to rule out all English speaking countries, as well as France (Fi speaks the language). Again though, I really do not think it is a European country. Also, I would rule out Vietnam as thats where Lee is from (Or maybe it Thailand - I think its Thailand), and they would have sort of mentioned something.

On a side point, plot wise, as it is a surprise attack I doubt an entire fleet of planes flew from Europe without being noticed.

Sorry if I sound obsessive, i'm bored. lol. But yeah good book series, but if I had not loved it as a kid I probably wouldn't think so much of it now. I also always liked the titles.

That's what i thought, proximity to Australia and i think there was something that kinda implied that they couldn't communicate well ie. language barriers
Thus, in my mind, excluding, Hawaii, New Caledonia (again Fi) and NZ


What country did others assume and why??
