why do they use katakana for words like "boku" and "hotto"(to be relieved)
in the novel gotaifumanzoku? or is it trendy thing to use katakana?

Put simply, katakana used for native Japanese word is applied in a similar way as bolding or italicising in English. It is used to give emphasis to an object, action or idea.

As Lexi said, its main purpose is to emphasise what Oto is trying to say. For example: he writes boku in katakana to emphasise that he is different to other people.

But it also is trendy, which is useful to Oto's purpose because he wants as many people as possible to understand that "disabled" people are still people.
