i won't diss it before i try it though.

my year graduated in 06.

20% of students took official gap years
40% went to uni
25% drank themselves stupid (either in australia, or overseas)
15% got a job because they didn't get into uni.

(yeah i'd say thats about right)

So im guessing that the people who go straight to uni live near the uni they go to, or their parents pay for their accomodation.. Are there any people that are going straight to uni but arent like this? I just rekon it would be hard to set yourself up in a new city with hardly any money..

I'm not big on the idea - I'm looking forward to going to uni and making new friends, if I stayed back my current friends going to uni wouldn't include me in things.

Moreso its one extra year between me and a job with a salary which can make up for my incredibly small penis.

I've seen it done, and i know people who have done it in both sydney and canberra. Not everyone gets supported by their parents, some have jobs etc and support themselves fully. If you've got the desire, then you'll probably be able to do it.

I like the idea of taking a year off. Get a good job, save some money.
Somewhat hard without a degree.

i took a gap year... after entering uni. yehp, i backed out. i think I lasted 4 or 5 weeks in uni..

i just didnt have the right frame of mind at the start of this year. so i went out got a job, raked in some cash, travelled a bit (gold coast :D ) and now I'm looking forward to going back to uni.

is checkout a good job? honestly...no.
precisely. hence, taking a gap year in the hope of finding a 'good' job is not a good idea.

The library.

I have a friend who works as a casual at her local library, $25 an hour and all she has to do is wear library clothes and go around picking up books. Best story she told me was when an old lady returned some books filled with her own pornographic photos. I'm not bullshitting!!!11

Correct!

@ library idea, you can only do a few hours at a time because it's fucking boring. I spoke to a mate who does it (with his ipod in) and he can really only do 4 hours worth max a day. a) they don't get enough books to warrant a fulltime job b) its a mindless task

I wish I'd taken a gap year before starting uni. You get to work and earn money, whilst having a freedom to learn whatever you like, not be stuck under a pile of essays and assignments. Earning over a certain amount within 18 months also entitles you to youth allowance, so you can mooch off the government once you start uni, not having to rely on a part-time job or prostitution for cash

I'd definitely have taken a gap year to go out and get some $$, work experience, fun and travel under my belt, had the blasted Melbourne Model not decided to swoop in and take away that opportunity.
I'm still wishing I'd been able to.
