Which is better to put in the burette: the acid or the base? When we did it we put the base in, and used phenolphaline (sp?), but in books, and also in last yr's HSC, it suggests that the acid should be put in the burette. If it were to ask you for a procedure in a exam, you could put either, right? Also, which indicator is used when the acid is put int he burette, i can imagine it would be difficult to observe a purple --> clear change.

i think the reason they suggest the acid in the burrette is that strong base eats away at the glass

but if it's only for a short period then thats fine so long as you rinse it out

personally i prefer going from colourless to pink when using phenol

but then again the indicator you use depends on the acid and base your receive

:confused: I'm sure I've done both ways in my lifetime. Purple to colourless is actually easier to see.

There's no difference.

I agree, I'm sure the only consideration is the ease of spotting the endpoint.

it does according to the titration competition, cause my school got oh so heavily penalised for using acid in the burette.
