Training Required for a GP to become an Ambulance Officer/Paramedic (1 Viewer)

Hello everyone!

I am interested in a medical career. What training would a general practitioner or non-emergency medicine specialist doctor have to do to become qualified as an ambulance officer/paramedic? How long would the training take? I am interested in working in the ED but do not want to work there for all of my career so I would avoid specialising in emergency medicine.

It may be best for you to shadow a GP for a day, then do a night shift with the paramedics. You'll see how differently these two roles work. As they're completely different but challenging jobs.

GP requires MBBS (6 years undergrad) + 5-6 years for FRACP to become a GP. Most people however do residencies or registrar roles in a variety of areas (pathology, surgery, Emergency medicine, etc before choosing a GP role).

Paramedics Degree requires 3-4 years, and has a much less competitive entry. Nonetheless they serve a vital role in the health system, and are the first on the scene.

Doctors are taught much more advanced airway management procedures for instance (google Rapid sequence induction) and have better access to a variety of drugs, whereas paramedics primarily stabilise and utilise a much narrower array of drugs.

RSI is actually soon to be approved for IC level Para's in ASNSW, similar to AV and their MICA level skills.

But onto the question - not sure why you would do MBBS and work as a Para... Just do the Para degree, it's reasonably good. If you want to work as a GP, do Med and be a GP - the roles are very different.

What lots of episodes of Trauma and compare it to the earlier seasons of Scrubs. Far more realistic than the suggestion of shadowing people.
