I just have a quick question to ask about essay questions that involve a "outline the trends in -whatever- in recent years" component. How exactly would you set out an answer to that type of a question - do you name what the trend is and then show the years it happened in and how, or do you go by years and state which years displayed what trends?

I don't think it really makes a difference. Both ways would work and they would both answer the question stated.

It doesn't really matter, as long as you respond to the answer in logical terms and show the trends that have occurred and back them up with statistics, graphs etc. you should be fine. They won't penalise you for answering the question with either way you stated.
