Sounds like its definitely a hardware problem, open up the case, check to see the RAM is still in the slots, sometimes they come loose and this causes a few problems.

Could be quite a few things actually :S Hard drive, CPU, motherboard, powerunit.

I was thinking it was a hard disk problem but when that happened to me I got a message "Cannot Access C:/ CPU in protected mode etc"

Is the computer running dispite nothing showing on the screen? It would have thought your monitor may be broken.

Otherwise it sounds like your computer has crashed...do you get a message of any kind when you restart the computer?

I had the frikkin exact problem, and when I disconnected the power-cable, and plugged it in again, it worked fine.

When I got a new motherboard, it never happened again.

My old motherboard had a surge through it, and ruined it, much like the thread starters description.

In the end, i found out it killed my CPU, RAM and Motherboard and was due to a faulty PSU

Powersuplies can cause a whole lot of problems that you wouldn't expect.

Someone blew my old hard drive by pulling the cord out while the computer was still on. They should have just restarted it, but as I said before, when that happened I got a message "cannot access C drive"

nothing appears on the screen. its completely black like in permanent sleep mode. there is no flcikering cursor like in a dos screen thing.

my friends think either its a software thing - dled a worm
or a hardware thing - check out the ram.

r Dell computers unreliable???

how do i change the power supply again?

If it's a Dell, then see if it's under warranty. You'll need your Service Tag number first though.
And If it's an Optiplex, there should be 4 lights at the back - ABCD. When you turn the computer on, note down which ones turn on and what colour.

If you have Gold Support, they're a lot more helpful than the standard support.

Also, when you turn the computer on, although your screen is black, do your keyboard lights - Caps, Num, Scroll Lock lights flicker once?

Same thing happened to me aswell, but the surge didnt kill my cpu luckily, and my ram was sorta ok but wasnt compatible with the new mb i had to get to replace, so i didnt get a chance to check out the ram to see if it was ok

i sorta sat there for a few minutes stunned when it happened, then i tried the power button haha no chance

thread starter will have to fork out some money to pay for the shit he prolly fried

I dont think so.

i dont think i did any thing to cause a power surge. just normal usage.

i think mine is the 1yr standard warranty. and i bought the comp at the end of feb so i think it might have expired.

If the computer is starting; but the monitor stays on 'standby' mode, then the most likely problem is that the monitor is not communicating with the computer. Plugging the monitor into an incorrect port will do this - or into a non functioning or damaged graphics card.

So, can you hear the computer booting up and loading, then eventually sit idle? (logged on/waiting to log on)

Thats what I thought, this happened to my friend a couple of weeks ago, she rang me up thinking her computer crashed and she lost everything - but when she explained it her monitor had just blown. A new monitor did the trick, best thing to do is to try someone elses monitor
