I am doing prelim at the moment and am trying to choose my subjects for the HSC at the end of this year...

My idea at the moment is

Advanced English
English Ext 1
English Ext 2
Advanced Maths
Maths Ext 1
Modern History
History Ext
Legal Studies

I'm hoping that anyone could give me some advice on the workload of doing 12 units. I mean...i realise there are 4 ext units which is going to be alot, but i really want to do all of them.
If i was going to drop anything it would be maths ext 1
Do you think that these 12 units will be too much work???

Re: Units to Study

umm...
well i don't know you so i can't tell you exactly what's right for you

But Hist ext and Eng ext 2 are both subjects where the PIP and MW require alot of self initiative..
You need to figure out if you have that..

also subjects like maths require work to be done each day.. consistency is the key..
IMHO if you got rid of maths ext 1 then you'd have a significantly lower amount of homework..

still i wouldnt advocate dropping maths ext 1... i'd actually go for dropping legal.. so much tedious content combiend with horrible scaling..[not that it should be a decisive factor ;)]

Re: Units to Study

keep them all, then drop something if you're finding it too hard to keep up with the work. who knows what might happen? you might not like one of them as much as you thought you would, so just keep them all until you can make an informed decision on what to drop.

I'm torn between dropping legal/pe, they are my best subjects (missed out on 5~ marks total on all assessments) but both scale terribly and i hate both of them with a passion.

lol with marks like that in those subject scaling isn't a factor. unless of course you start going crap in those subjects...but the interest factor is an important thing though.

Legal doesn't scale that horribly, I don't think. it just doesn't scale exceptionally either.

anyway, at the moment I'm thinking my year 12 subjects will be:
4u English
Economics
Legal
Business
Ancient

I could possibly drop ancient, depending on how I go with the workload. but I want to start off with 12 and take it from there.

Re: Units to Study

Can you all help me out please.

Ok so currently in year 11 Im doing 13 units
3 Unit English
Gen Maths
Bus Studies
Economics
Modern History
Society and Culture

For year 12 my definites are to drop society and culture, and pick up 4 unit english. That will bring me to 12 units.

From there, should I, a) Pick up extension history and drop either maths or business, leaving me with 11 units
b) Leave as is with 12 units (4 eng, gen maths, business, eco, modhistory)

And if I were to go with 11 units. Should I drop gen maths or business studies?

I'm aiming for a UAI around 95.

Thanks for your help.

I am ranked 1st in my english advanced class, but I hate everything in the syllabus with a passion; shakespeare makes me want to go to sleep, i have literally fallen asleep during the othello movie variants at least 3 times this year.

I am thinking about dropping to standard just so I don't have to do shakespeare, I have no problem understanding it or anything but it really makes me not want to get up in the morning because it is that boring to me... am I an idiot? If I topped my class, which I think I would... I'd still get a top band 5 right, or it wouldn't count if I did 12 units and it was my worst?

English would still count, just grit your teeth and endure all that Shakespeare BS, it will be worth it in the long run.

Yeah otherwise people would play the system by taking compulsory English and do absolutely nothing so it doesn't count in HSC. lame
