Unvaccinated children will be banned from childcare facilities, and centres who do enrol them will face fines, after changes to the Public Health Act passed through cabinet Monday night.
The changes mean parents or guardians must provide evidence their child is fully vaccinated for age, is on a recognised catch-up schedule, or has an exemption approved by a doctor when they enrol their child.
To get an exemption, parents will have to receive counselling and fill out forms along with their doctor. Valid exemptions include a medical contraindication to vaccination or religious grounds.
Childcare facilities may be fined if directors fail to comply with the changes and obtain vaccination records before enrolment.
The president of the NSW branch of the Australian Medical Association, Brian Owler, described it as a "sensible" move by the government.[...]
