Diversity wasn't much of a party last year. It was more a collection of Con students who were pissed off at Action.
Rose Jackson came to power purely on the gender card. Katy Fernandez ALSO played the gender card, and she scored the most ballots of all the candidates in Wednesday's election. Victor Ma and Gigi Wong's successes have come purely from playing the race card. You really think these sorts of things have nothing to do with the elections?Xayma said:What the fuck does that have to do with anything to do with the union?
It has nothing more to do with those elections then you being Chinese had to do with your attempt to get on the SRC.
Katy is Rose Jackson.Phanatical said:Rose Jackson came to power purely on the gender card. Yes, it doesn't change the fact it is unethical to use it for your own advantage (as in playing oppressed minority, or by demeaning others) (Yes I do think Katy playing the gender card was unethical).Phanatical said:Rose Jackson came to power purely on the gender card. "The ends justify the means" is not a particularly widely-accepted ethical standpoint. It is only you (and your followers, should they exist) who believe you are the best person for the job, so if you take actions which are widely or universally regarded as unethical / wrong in order to achieve ends which are only your personal view, there is clearly a disparity there. Sorry if that last bit didn't make sense, I am tired.Phanatical said:I think it's justified to use it when you're against somebody like Rose Jackson. I made the mistake of not using my race card, except to criticise Jackson for playing the gender card, and I lost the election.
If I honestly believe that I would be the better person for the position of SRC President, shouldn't I do what I can to get into power, so that I can do the good work that I want to do?
Oh ok, sorry must've misread it.Techie said:"The ends justify the means" is not a particularly widely-accepted ethical standpoint. Also I just thought I'd add in that Jackson Fan played the race card many times in this election (don't tell me he didn't; you weren't at PNR to hear him say "I'm the only Asian candidate running" to every Asian student that walked past), so it comes from all sides of the House. And I still lean towards the view that "vote for me because I'm an engineer" is also playing the oppressed minority card.
Oh and withoutaface, about full fee-paying places:
- what I said was no increases in full fee-paying places, not no full fee-paying places altogether. There will be no less revenue than there is now.
- however, if we did need more funding, we could receive it from a Government with a commitment to a strong public education system rather than one who would prefer to privatise as much as possible.
You have nobody but yourselves to blame. It took me all of 5 seconds to find those polling booth times from the website, it's not like it's terribly designed (it could be better, but it's perfectly functional). You yourself have also admitted in the past that Honi is sent to the Con, but simply that nobody bothers to read it. The information was there if you guys wanted to find it; it's your own apathy that meant no-one knew about the booth, not the fact that the Union/SRC is withholding information from you.Phanatical said:Nobody at the Con even knew of the booth. We don't get the Bull, we don't get the Honi, and nobody visits the website because it's crap.
Well when they know that one candidate has almost their entire voting base near one booth and close it early, and they know that this candidate is always the best at organising prepolling, then tell one of the people in charge of his campaign that there will be no prepolling, then present some prepoll results on the count night, one would be forgiven for thinking that it was an attempt at sabotage.Techie said:A lot of the booths closed earlier than the main ones at Manning/Wentworth/Fisher. This was always planned, and I imagine it happens every year (I can't be certain).
The times were published beforehand in all the different sources (website, Bull, Candidature, possibly Honi)
Manning House: 08.30 – 19.00
Holme Foyer: 10.00 – 15.00
Wentworth L3: 08.30 – 17.00
Wentworth L2: 17.00 – 19.00
Fisher Library: 08.30 – 19.00
PNR: 10.00 – 15.30
Law School: 11.30 – 15.30
Conservatorium Café (Downstairs): 11.30 – 14.30
Nursing: 10.30 – 14.30
You see that a lot of the less central locations are operated for shorter hours. I don't think they were deliberately trying to sabotage Engineering.
