The Union is a terminology that, while not technically correct, a large percentage of students use to refer to student organisations in general.

In conclusion, get off your high horse and shut the fuck up.
so what? that doesn't change the fact that most people don't actually know what their money goes to which was the point that i was making

and thanks for the lovely mature response... read the rules of the board again coz obviously you missed them

I am all for it. It is time Unions got their act together and worked FOR ALL students. UWSConnect will survive because it actually tries to encourage students whereas UWSSA will need to do a bit more work. The Unions claim that their services will cease to exist under VSU. My question is, who uses them? The UWSSA has spent a lot of time working with underprivileged which is fine, but the UWS Office of the Dean of Students already does that.

What's more is that by utilising UWS services, students are going about their misadvantures the correct way, the official way. By utilising UWSSA services, whilst they may assist, they will generally not be as effective. Obviously because Support Services is officially recognised by the university.

Our fees are modest yes. And we are continually drawn to the argument: our uni fees are much higher. However, let's compare them:

-You don't have to pay for uni fees, you can defer them. SAF can't be deferred and the university can withdraw your enrolment.
-Uni fees are based on a user-pay system, if you are utilising more facilities (e.g. medicine), you pay more. SAF is one equal payment, whether you use the facilities or not.

The union can survive. How? Operate like all other organisations in this world. Stop pretending to operate in student interests, and start doing it. Not everyone agrees with the Western Onion, and some of the facilities the union provides excludes other students. This is so unfair and hypocritical of a union that parades on itself as being all for student rights.

Being a UWSConnect member, I can safely say that VSU will benefit both unions that operate efficiently and their students.

plus apart from food, everything else that everyone is bitching about money being wasted on is not a responsibility of UWSSA.. so seriously go have a bitch at UWS Connect if you think its such a disgusting waste of money.. or PAUWS....

Many of the Directors of UWSConnect do not like VSU. uwsconnect will survive though because of its structure. It doesn't make it an evil empire.

Just reading from the other posts.

Can I just say, that when I first joined UWSConnect, I was on the Bankstown Committee. At bankstown, the Bankstown STudents Assoc (now UWSSA) had created massive problems. They were insolvent (according to their president); they were not living up to their expectations, they continually blamed the universityy for all their problems and to top it off there was legal action taken. UWSSA has come a long way, however it needs to go further.

I don't want MY fees going to supporting the "Honk Your Horn at the Vice Chancellor" parades. I have a lot of respect for UWS, and the unions can be real clowns about it. I know exactly what goes on with some of these unions and Cth Government's move was a good one. The amount of misconduct I have heard of is amazing and really a threat to our rights. I heard a report one president deferred studies so they could continue as president and be paid.

Union Executives used to be paid (not sure now). UWSConnect executives don't. It is voluntary. I don't get paid to be on the Committee and I shouldn't be.

On a tangent, one thing I loved about Nixon was his sense of reality. One can always recall his speech about the Silent Majority - its always a minority union that's going to stuff it all up for us by putting words in our mouth.

Why doesn't the union do a survey? Probably because they know most students will be against USU (Universal Student Unionism - another way of saying "everybody pay for our project that will benefit some").

Furthermore, if I have a problem with the university, I will deal with it myself. I don't need a placard. I cam to university to develop my skills and I think something I should be able to practice is my ability to reason and seek answers without the help of a union based on self-interest.

Perhaps she should show it instead of putting up ridiculous arguments which have been refuted countless times in the past.

She does tend to act like a bit of a fool from time to time, no matter how intelligent she may be.

i might not study law, or economics but i understand VSU...

i gurantee some of my union fees this semester went to students to go buy paint and write 'No VSU'...

both sides of argument have been equally refuted over and over... there are as many people posing both sides of argument... both have been refuted hence the title "debate" that has been given to it....

and perhaps you could PM "she" then if you're so off put by it.. otherwise get over it

i do not understand why you bring up, not just in this post but past posts, that "i may not do law but...." it just sounds like your bitter you don't do it or something like that...
no one who does law raises that as a reason for their beliefs.. its totally irrelevant... law students don't have some stupide superiority copmlex just coz they do law like you seem to infer

both arguments are equally repetitve.... both can be refuted for different reasons.... it would be nice for you to give a mature reason rather than "shut the fuck up"...

just as you said, more rudely, you are for it so that's your opinion so you don't really care what the other arguments are... i would say the same in return however unlike you i manage to say it without personal insults

Ps - repetitive or not - i'm not the only one who thinks this and they are not unsubstantiated arguments - http://www.vsu.com.au/myths.htm#what_anch - if you think its such shit read this.. i doubt you'll agree and i don't care if you do but maybe then you'll stop being rude since the arguments i raised are exactly what the anti-vsu groups are validly arguing.

i'm not attacking UWS Connect :p... simply raising that people with gripes against money being spent on that kinda stuff need to raise their complaints with UWS connect not the union coz since the unino doesn't organise it they have no impact on it
