I always thought scaling was meant to take away the need to choose the "correct" subjects, instead it seems to do the opposite.

Yeah especially since General is capped and you would have 4 units of maths in the other case.
If you are of the ability to do 2 unit you should because the more difficult exams means small mistakes dont drop you down large percentiles and it isnt capped.
