Missing the trials would come under your school's assessment policy. Mine has two options - one, if a student knows in advance that you will be unable to sit the exam then they have you sign a document to not tell anyone what is in the paper and do it early - or later but then it is used as a 'estimated mark' and not the actual mark. If a student is ill on the day and has the appropriate documentation they do it later and again it is used as an estimate.

Missing the HSC with the appropriate and approved documentation means a 'misadventure' appeal and so school assessment mark would be used to determine the final mark. If the documentation isn't there then a zero would be awarded for the exam which would affect the ATAR.

Yes but what happens in the case where a student doesn't sit ANY of the trials or HSC exams? Do they get an estimate based on their small assessment ranks in the cohort? Isn't that a bit unfair in the sense that trials are usually harder than the smaller assessments?

If they don't sit any trial it is up to the school to decide how to determine their final marks/ranks - as I said above. They might have to sit the exams later or earlier or just get an estimate based on their other tasks.

The BOS will either grant or not grand a 'misadventure' for any or all HSC exams missed and will then use the school's marks to determine the final HSC mark.

Whether it is one or all exams the process would be the same.

I don't know what you mean by 'smaller' assessments as my trials are worth 30% and I have at least one other task worth 30% and two 20% ones - so they aren't all that different. Thus the assessment mark would be based on 70% of the assessments being completed - not an insignificant weight for the course.

For a large number of schools the trial is worth 45% of the assessment. The others might be worth 20, 20, 15 or something like that.
They generally don't make it 50% because the board has a rule that students should attempt more than 50% of the value of their assessments.
I think your 30% for the trial is the exception, not the rule.
