"Gather and process information to interpret the results of the Michaelson-Morely Experiment"

I don' think we touched on it at school. And I can't seem to understand what they expect.

Well basically, you have to 'pretend' you did the entire experiment at school, so you know:
-what the experiment is trying to find
-the method of carrying out the experiment
-what results were retained

If you haven't done it in school, then you should speak to your teacher, because in the HSC, if you get a question reguarding the Michelson-Morely experiment and you write 'we haven't done it', then you will get 0 for it!

It's not hard to find on the internet if you want to look it up for yourself.

this dot point (and in fact, no dot point in HSC Physics) asks students to ahve actually done the michelson-morley experiment

in fact, i dont think anyone would have done it, since they used expensive equipment and semi-silvered mirrors, etc

this dot point asks you ot (forget the other words) "interpret the results of the Michaelson-Morely Experiment"

so we are interpreting/analysing the results of the expt, discussing implications, what it suggests/doe snot suggest.etc

the method/aim of the expt comes under another dot point, imoO , but you are right, in that you need to know it (and no, the aim WAS NOT SIMPLY to measure differences in the speed of light or prove the existence of the aether, but thats another story)

i'll start you up:

the result was : a null result

now you do some research , read some textbooks (and yes, every major HSC textbook has info on this) and look on the internet to help you find out what this result signifies/means with regards to the speed of light/the aether, etc

then, if you ned help clarifying some points, just come back and ask and we'd be happy to help you out!

umm... i think that even thinking about thinking of doing it is too expensive or just too hard.... i would not believe them if someone told me that they had carried out an accurate repeat of the MM experiment at school. lol

to the OP>> i think that the dot point means just to know they key points of the experiment such as how it was carried out, the aim and other important information such as the result...

Well that do have one a USYD, and I know a friend that said his school went there to have a 'look' at it....if that counts haha

Thanks. Yep I've found information on it. I just didn't know what the implications of "interpret" were. Come to think of it, yes we have discussed the MM experiment at school and the "implications" as you said.
