You're correct in saying that it holds many differerernt meanings depending upon which reference book/textbook/author you look at.

Gentrification basically means you are improving the socio-economics of an area, and making it fit for a higher class of residents. This generally means wealthier residents will move into an area that was previously occupied by lower income residents. In simple terms, gentrification means 'to make fit for a gentleman'.

I'm confused, there are so many different definitions.
Gentrification is just another word for the Urban Decay + Renewal point of the syllabus.

Basically, gentrification is where a wealthier group of people (investors or residents) move into an older, more decayed area and fix it (renew it). It is commonly know as a cause of urban renewal.

gentrification is when there is an area which people used to live in has just declined to the state that its not really livable anymore but then has been renovated to make it livable in again and draws people back into it.
Pyrmont is a really good case study to use for gentrification =]

Gentrification:
in most cases it meant
the buying of an urban dwelling and renewing it [flourishing it]
Pymount, Redfern Ultimo are examples...

Gentrification is renewing an area or house to its original state for example run down terraces are rstored to wht they would have looked like originally, urban renewal is more when an area is totally renewed and renovated, it may have different more modern designs of house.
