Hey,

Just wondering if anyone knows what the Band 6 cut-off (raw mark) is usually set at for 2u maths. Someone said 110+, but that seems ridiculously high to me.

Is a mark of about 100-105 + the usual cut off?

Hmmm...I've been doing a bit of thinking.

I know that band six cut-offs for Chemistry are about 84-85% raw. 2u doesn't scale quite as well..so perhaps 87-88% raw?

That comes out at about 105 marks. Is my reasoning wrong or stupid?

90-97, If I'm correct (which i'm probably not), would be mid-high band 5 marks.

The process of aligning is different to the process of scaling. A course can align quite well without scaling well (scaling is done by UAC not BOS).

I read somewhere that in 2001, an 80% went to a 90%. At my school in the trials (which I would say slightly easier/slightly harder than HSC - imo slightly easier but its debatable) the marks aligned as followed as an example

64% to 82%
67% to 84%
79% to 89%
90% to 94%
98% to 98%

So based on the above, depending on the difficulty of the test, somewhere in the mid 90s could get to a Band 6. If you get 100+ you have a pretty good chance that you can get to a Band 6. And obviously if you get 110+ that is a Band 6.

i think around 90-95/120 but it really depends how difficult this years test was in comparison to other years.

That seems to be the figure that's mentioned everywhere so I'm going to go with that.

Also because I think I probably got something like 95. Not 100% sure though.

it seems to be that i read that thing too about how in the 2001 a mark of 96 (80%) became 90% so therefor 108(90%) came 95% etc. but you def need to be looking at around 100/120+ if u want that band6.

Yeah - I know I lost 11 marks at least, so that's 109. Hopefully i don't lose more than 9 stupid mistakes!

Thanks for your help

So if you actually get a good raw mark....110-15/120....do u get mad scaling up to like 99% or does it remain around 94-95%

well, my coordinator told me that last year the raw mark cut off for a band 6 was 85.

this year cant have been too much higher than that.. wont be in the hundreds i reckon. probably 90 something

i mean come on, last year was 85!!
that relieved me when he told me that LOL

I think we need terminology here:
Aligning: - Is the process of converting a raw mark to a mark out of 100, depending on what percentage of people got what marks that year, determining the cut-offs.
Scaling: - Is the process (UAC) of comparing aligned marks in subjects to one another. For instance, we all know that a 90 in maths is better than a 90 in general maths. Scaling determines HOW MUCH better it is and is used to calculate your UAI.

Was that 85/100 or 85/120??

Yeah I'm thinking about 96+/120 equates to a band 6. No one can certainly know though unless you're a BOS person. Apparently the 2004 HSC was 94+/120 to equate to a band 6. But I dunno if each year is the same, BUT I did hear that the standard of each HSC maths exam is quite similar so the scaling thing whatever should be similar as well.

ah you know what..
im still upset though.
i think i might've pulled off a 100/120 and thatd probably be a really low band 6 right?
I was hoping this'd be a high band 6 for me.
hopefully school assessment will average it up a bit more :worried:

Well, I'd assume some freak would have got 120/120 for Maths.....there are a couple of Maths people out there who would!! Assuming that you said 85/120 would go to a 90, I'd say based on last year a 100/120 would go to about 94ish?
