A lot of people do it to finish their degree and get out into the workforce earlier. Others do it early to free up time for themselves in their later years so they can focus on work on their careers more in those years. Some just do it because they can.

do you mean for the HSC or university? either way:

HSC - some people think that "if i do 12 units and stuff up in a subject, it won't count" - One of the most stupidest things I've every heard, why not just start with 10 really good units and then try to succeed in all of them rather than stressing your brain for the whole year only to "give up" in the final leg of the race

The other reason is to make up for failed units.

Overloading is usually done either to finish the degree quicker or to finish on time (because you have either failed or dropped a unit). In hindsight, I might have considered overloading in order to finish my degree in 2.5 years. That being said, I now know what subjects would need to be done in which semester based on their workload and difficulty - which I know now but didnt then.
