We've been using a mix of visual basic and freebasic. Main rational is that in the HSC you're not using a specific language apart from pseudo code and although VB.net isn't as close to pseudo code, freebasic provides a very easy and friendly environment to practice.
Most kids that touched Pascal did not like the language, because they only learned some very basic commands and how to write a more structured code than their mind was thinking at the time. But Pascal teach you to have a good habit prevent you to write spaghetti and doggy codes.
