i sent and mucked around with lazseeker and if i did standard english instead of advanced and got the same mark i would be getting a uai of 5-10 points hihger. is the right? deos that mean it is easier or harder to beat people doing standard?

dont look at the mark, look at the percentile within the state
coming within top 1% in standard is the same as coming top 20% in advanced.......might not be exactly those figures but roughly that

Thats one huge drop in moderated assessment, what would cause such a huge jump??

Such a big drop could be caused by the class as a whole not performing particularly well on the final exam. Assuming that friend was ranked first, he's guaranteed the top exam mark as his moderated assessment mark (which may have been 85). If the class had a fairly low average on the HSC exam, all of the other moderated assessment marks would have been pulled down accordingly.

Usually that kind of drop doesn't occur unless there aren't very many students in the class.

same diff, percentile is what i mean, not mark. if i got ion the same percentile for adv as i did in stnd then i would do a lot worse in the uai calculation aparently.

put in hsc mark of 84 for advanced english and 69 for standard english
both would you in the top 17.5% of the state
but look the scaled mark for advanced is 81 but the scaled mark for standard is 56

A difference of 25 which would probably mean a UAI higher by about 7 points

Bon - that is extremely surprising.

Do you know what the top exam mark was for your class?

The only scenario I can think of in which such a drop would occur is when the top exam mark is very high (near 100) with the rest of the class performing comparatively poor (creating a low average).

Lazarus could you just answer a question for me, it concerns my chem class ranking, currently I'm coming first with about 90% and the class average is about 36%, and it looks as if this pattern will continue into the hsc, will this have any detrimental effect on my overall hsc mark?there are about 17 ppl in the class and the person comung 2nd has an average of about 55%.

ill give a simplified answer to wat Laz would give...
since your coming 1st with scores of 90%, it looks like u'll do well in the HSC...say if u get 95 in the HSC exam, since your ranked 1st, that exam mark becomes your moderated assessment mark, therefore ur result would be:
Moderated Assessment mark: 95
Examination mark: 95
HSC mark: 95

the rest of your class wont do as well, but for your own scores, as long as u are 1st, the rest of ur class wont matter provided u do as well as u are now, in the HSC exam

Thanx a lot Minai, it is reassuring to know that other peoples results wont interfere with my own, cos that would be pretty unjust.

The thing is if someone in your class was coming second with a mark of 88 they would get pulled down........but yes your safe as long as your first
