Hey guys,

I'm writing an article on the standard and quality of UWS- resources, teaching etc.

I'm aware of the rise in union fees, cuts in tutorials and the imposition of a parking fee. Do any of you have any grievances or issues with UWS?

I'm basically looking at the inequities between UWS and the city universities. Sort of bringing into light the fact that UWS has a lot of potential but because of dodgy admin, shit govt funding etc, it's at a disadvantage.

Thanks in Advance, I'd appreciate any comments you guys have.

*awaits for a flame war to begin*

The rise in fees wasn't that much or that bad. It was only about $20 or so. And I'd rather an increase of $20 in fees than a 25% increase in HECS. Even though I have no idea really where my $182 actually goes? Maybe Jonnathon A can spread some light on this :p

The cut in tutorials haven't effected me as a student yet, mainly because I don't do popular subjects related to business, law, etc.

About the parking fees - I still don't understand why Blacktown students don't have to pay. Anyway, $49.95 isn't that expensive, for me thats two weeks transport, for me its $27 a week to get between home and uni by transport.

Admin - I'm sure every uni has some sort of admin problem - it wouldn't be a uni without admin problems - just think of all the forms that they have to process!!!!

Personally, I find the quality of teaching to be very very good. Better than what many people who don't go to the uni realise. For example, my nature based tourism lecturer last year (I have her again for health impacts of tourism this semester) - she graduated from USYD, and she specialises in ecotourism subjects - and whats best is that she has sat in on United Nations meetings and shes a member of many ecotourism councils and commities in Australia. Its this first hand experience that you can not gain from a textbook.

eh, thats all I can think of at the moment.

btw, why are you writing an article? and where are you writing an article for? Sorry for being nosey :p

.
Union fees rose because the University has sought to improve the quality of the services provided by unions, and allowed for a better union, UWSConnect Ltd. However the new laws will mean this fee paid will probably not affect the students in the long run.

As for cuts in tutorials, I think all universities have similar problems. Can't pin it down on UWS alone.

Parking fees, $49.50 a year isn't bad considering some universities charge an arm and a leg for their parking.

I'm basically looking at the inequities between UWS and the city universities. Sort of bringing into light the fact that UWS has a lot of potential but because of dodgy admin, shit govt funding etc, it's at a disadvantage.

Good luck with the article.

from a non uws perspective
ive been to acu, mac and uws, sat in lectures and checked out the facilities. i think they are all the same i found it cool how they all use the same webct and library systems cuz people make all the unis out to be so different. i cant really comment on the parking and cut tutorials but they dont seem to have really affected my friends who go there every day. i think they could do with a bit more parking whats close.. i mean there is so much space for it lol (im talking about werrington campus)

I think that it really depends on what subjects that your studying. They seriously would not be able to cut down any tourism subjects any further. The most that tourism subjects go for is 3 hours. And this is only a lecture. We very rarely get tutorials or anything. But our class sizes are very very small. I have a class with only 20 people in it, so lecturers are just about equal to a tutorial anyway.

I think UWS is 1 of the best Unis in NSW, everything about it is top class, everything seems 2 run smoothly without the slightest hitch, the admin seems 2 be a hard working bunch, the students are great and the facilities are great...yep i'm convinced UWS is the best Uni in NSW right now and the rest are no competition... :p

whatever.

Back to the topic of the thread:
I'd like to know what my fees are actually spent on. Other city unis know where most of their money is going. But I don't use many facilities at uni, other than the coke machines :D lol. Oh, and the jumping castle when theres a jumping castle :D

I like UWS, well havent been to any other uni so i cant compare, but basically UWS has friendly ppl, helpful lecturers & tutes, clean grounds.
on the union fees... im a uni newbie so i wouldnt know about the rise in fees. Altho that thing about parking, for me its kinda unfair that u need to pay so much just to park at uni - sticker n fees!! its a big strain on us because with all the books n uniform we gotta buy
and yer... :p:D

Hey,

I'm a first yr. at UWS so don't really know much bout the probs in funding etc. but so far I've had an awesome time.

Facilities:
The facilities are REALLY clean, like compared to the grafitti in some uni's I've visited in my time.. it's crazy how clean everything is.

Atmosphere:
I'm at Parra and Penrith and they're really grassy and open, without any scary or dingy buildings, and the atmosphere in the classrooms is really warm. It's not intimidating or intense. Ppl. do the work, and do it well, but it isn't like full on.

Classes:
I like how my law units r structured - 2 lots of 2hr seminars. Great way to learn. Much more teacher-student engagement then in a lecture, where there is a barrier almost between u and the teacher, and the 2hrs means we get lots done.

People:
Every1 is really friendly - like u'll meet ppl. in the bookshop or at the cafe...there's always some1 to strike up a convo with!

she/he might do science whihc requires uniforms, lab coats equipment etc.

maybe im an idiot to go to the most populated campus, but its really hard to find a computer at peak times. i know how stupid this is becasue peak times = alot of people. but i can never get a computer.

and what happeend to the pool and table tennis and pool tables? shouldnt they be in the bar or something?

ive not experienced other city unis that much, only usyd at a modern history lecture. i liek the arcade, soo cool.
otherwise the only other negative thing i can think of about uws is what other poeple say about which really depresses me.

thats abotu it really....i mean most of the stuff that gets me is external to the uni. oh and when i get a car, maybe ill complain about parking. maybe.

Hawkesbury has 2 pools - an indoor and an outdoor. Table tennis in the cafeteria and pool tales for free in the cafeteria and you pay for the good quality ones in the bar :D :uhhuh:

Oooooh ... we have cows! City uni's don't :p
