So i'm currently doing a combined degree which is 5 years, i've got 3 yrs left. After which i'll study MBBS which I think for postgrad is only 4 years?(correct me if i'm wrong).
I have no idea what you have to do after the degree if you want to specialise in a field. Can someone explain what is residency and internship and how long are those and anything else required to specialise in something?
Thanks

You're correct in saying that a Usyd MBBS is 4 years. But that itself isn't enough to actually become a practicing doctor.

First, you do your internship, which is usually 1 year. This is basically the professional training period, after which you become registered as a medical practitioner. So after this, you're actually a doctor, albeit a junior one.

Next up is the residency, where you spend 1-3 years working in the hospital, usually on rotation through various departments to gain more experience.

After that, you can apply for specialist training, which is done by professional medical Colleges, not universities. This bit lasts usually 5 years, after which you register as a specialist.
