Yeah, instead of "buying" presents, I get my girlfriend things she likes, ie sometimes I surprise her with some of her favourite fruit when I pick her up from work.

So you steal the fruit?

guys like practical gifts which they can use. rarely do they want anything ornamental unless it's their favourite band/movie/sportperson etc.

I don't feel it has to be practical, so long as it shows thought that's enough.

When you first start a relationship, you feel like buying each other presents because that's when it's all new and exciting... But you don't have any occasions because you've just started going out, so it starts off on a monthly basis.

A few months later, both of you are agonizing over what to buy each other next and wishing you didn't have to. That's when you stop the monthly and move on to the 6-monthly, or yearly presents.

Birthdays, Valentine's Day, Christmas and anniversaries are a must.

That being said, buy her a present whenever you feel like it. A girl can never get too many presents. Or give her small gifts say... after her exams finish, or before they start (to say good luck), or if she did well in an exam. Sorry, I'm always thinking in terms of school now.

You'd be surprised how much small things like that mean to a girl.
It shows that you know her well and care about her, instead of buying her a thoughtless, random piece of jewellery.
