Selective schools may even be doing some students a disservice. I mean if JRAHS has the opportunity to choose the *best* 180 people in the state, then there is no reason why every single one of them should not get all rounder and 99+. I'm sure they would have plenty of students who u could probably stick in a dark closet for 6 years and they would still top the state.

I do however admire the competitive environment they offer and the challenge. I don't know how i would have coped tho with that pressure, and although in some ways I wish i went to a selective school where i had back up for my assessment marks and was really pushed, i don't know how i could have coped emotionally.

The comments about selective school students being singly-focussed.....all the selective school students i've met have been talented musically, at sports etc with many different interests and opinions about the world. Even more so than my supposedly well rounded non-selective peers. Everyone's different, generalisations don't win an argument. ( i suppose thats a bit hypocritical considering the ones' i've offered tho!)

selective school are exactly the same as public schools, its just the ppl are more competative and work a little harder. They still promote tolerance, extra-curricular activities and socialisin skills etc

one point I agree with that someone mentioned is that some ppl in the school are not used to interacting with ppl of lesser intelligence because their friends are ppl in other selectives.

also a UAI below 90 is inconceivable to some ppl and gettin 95 doesnt take that much work and isnt thaaat impressive, Im sorry to say that but thats the way it is. Many ppl want 99+ and thats the only acceptable mark they will take. You know that most of the ppl in the grade will get above 90 so thats not the main problem, the big thing is to get over 99. This doesnt sound too good, but Im sure many of you will recognise this.

With saying that however, ppl are multitalented, music and sports feature prominantly in my school and we will competitions and such so we're not completely study focused

I dont think its any more fairer to generalise selective schools than it is to generalise private schools. both offer a good education, so do the regular public schools for that matter.

at first your comments about selective school pissed me off but after your explaination for your comments, i think that they are justified. i go to a selective school(hurlstone) and everything you have said about selective schools is correct and now i'm starting to worry about what i will be missing that you private school kids have.
i've learned a heap about private schools just from this thread and they sound a lot better than i thought they were. my views on these schools have changed in some ways but the snobbiness and prestige stuff will always stay the same.
there aren't too many people in my school that don't put their hsc as their number one priority in high school life. i have been to school with pretty bright kids all my life and it makes it harder for me to deal with kids who aren't as bright as the people i know because i'm not used to dealing with them.
and i totally agree with this quote of yours.

In any case wouldnt you all agree that it is better to be well grounded with a range of interests etc and a higher tolerance to different types of people, rather than only concerned with what mark you get in a few exams??

you are totally correct on that one as i do find my friends extremely boring at some times. i seem like the only that wants to go places and be outdoors instead of studying.

thanks for helping me understand more about those private schools that i never thought much of before today.

it depends on th individual whether they r gonna work hard or not. obviously going to a 'smart' school may increase their performance.....but still it is up to the person themselves

my friend who used to go there told me about a story how this loser guy
was held by 4 ppl in the toilets and they shove some stick up his ass


i mean COME ON thats just disgusting
the trinity ppl on the train are bad in general

they draw on the trains with markers to look "cool", are racist (a group was dissin me and my friends), pick fights and hold the train doors open so the train gets delayed and ppl like me who catch a bus end up missing it sometimes because of them

the worst story is when a man with down syndrome was on the train... hyped up about football or something
and the trinity ppl were bagging him out and tryin to get him pissed off so he could be their little comedy show

lucky some1 from the public swore at them and even offered for them to fight him if they had guts

thats the story of the day - trinity are the WORST (edit : trinity people on the train are by far the worst school... sadly the reputation is ruined by only one certain group)!!! (note - back carriage hornsby 3:46 train lol see for urself)

you're generalising there. you can't deny that there aren't people like that at your school. it's unfortunate that these types of people exist at all. it's a fact that every school has these kinds of people. my bro is there and he is nothing like that. i know of many people who have bros there, they're nothing like that. the fact of the matter is that you haven't seen the broader trinity population. you've only seen those on the trains. there are over 1000 trinity boys. how many have you seen?

if you see such a thing happen perhaps you should report it to the school? virtually all pvt schools will punish any student doing anything to bring the school's reputation into disrepute.

quit being so naive. of course there are always going to be these types of people in life. don't forget that they're everywhere, not just in the places that you choose to hate.

perhaps i should have edited the last sentence

never before have i met ppl on a train as rude as that group...

im not saying your brotehr is bad or anything hes probably the kewlest dude in the world

but yeah... as i sed im directing it at the train people
their behaviour is shocking... you should see for yourself

complaining will do nothing - there is only 1 group who does it on the train... its made up of about 15 people

ppl from hurlstone came to my school (fort street) and the way they described ur school isnt one of ppl soooo worried bout marks and stuff (isnt it a half selective with the boarding school ppl?) in fact it sounds like a more relaxed school, like more of a public school than fort street. Actually one of them is going back to hurlstone , uve probly heard of him - Chris Ng.

i know chris ng, used to be in the same class. our school is all selective but the boarders tend to be on a different level to the day students. we have lots of people who are relaxed about school but most still want to do well and are quite competitive.

the only standard everyone will agree with is that 100 is quite a good UAI.

are u joking? are there ANY courses that you couldn't get into with a uai of 99.95? therefore, why bother freaking out about it... that's the only reason for a uai, uni!
as far as i can see, the highest uai is for combined law at sydney - and that was 99.6
