I believe my school only counts first and second places toward the dux award, with first places being worth more than second places. I only included top 2 rankings.

Which student A,B or C is most likely to get the dux award?:

Student A:

1st place Mathematics
1st place Mathematics Advanced
1st Place Visual Arts
1st place Music 1
2nd place English Advanced
2nd place English Extension 1
2nd place Community and Family Studies

Student B:

1st place English Advanced
1st place English Extension 1
1st place Biology
1st place Legal Studies
1st place Ancient History
1st place Community and Family Studies

Student C:

1st place Chemistry
1st place Physics
1st place PDHPE
2nd place Biology
2nd place Mathematics
2nd place Mathematics Extension 1

Thanks guys :)

If first places are worth more than second one could only presume that student B would get it. At our school the student with the highest ATAR comes back on our school's birthday and is awarded dux and a $1000 cheque.

By the criteria given its B. Tbh though that's a pretty crap system for determining dux- the best way is to just do it on ATAR after results come out imo- that was every individual subject is taken into account and you don't have issues like "Is 2nd in MX2 better than 1st in Economics" etc

Student B

This is a stupid question though. If Student B is a douche to all the teachers, then they probably won't get it etc.

If you meant Mathematics Extension One then it should be student A simply due to the Maths, purely because they are only a rank behind student B in other subjects and maths ext. 1 scales better than any subject B does.
Plus, it could be C purely because if A and B don't get 92+ raw then they will get a shitly-scaling mark in CAFS.
But they have 12 units so they should be fine.

I'm saying A.

EDIT: I didn't read your first line, I'm just going off ATAR.

At my school the competitors for first were:

A:
1st - English Advanced
1st - English Extension
1st - Biology
1st - Economics
1st - Studies of Religion 1
=1st - Chemistry
3rd - Mathematics
(19 points - counting 1st as 3, 2nd as 2, and 3rd as 1)

B:
2nd - English Advanced
2nd - Biology
=4th - Chemistry
4th - Maths Extension 2
5th - Maths Extension 1
=5th - Studies of Religion 1
(4 points)

C:
1st - English Standard
1st - Physics
1st - PDHPE
1st - Catholic Studies (Non-ATAR)
4th - Biology
4th - Mathematics
(12 points)

D:
=1st - Chemistry
2nd - Maths Extension 2
3rd - Maths Extension 1
3rd - English Advanced
5th - Biology
6th - Studies of Religion 1
(7 points)

E:
1st - Maths Extension 1
1st - Maths Extension 2
4th - Physics
=4th - Chemistry
4th - Studies of Religion 1
8th - English Advanced
(6 points)

F:
2nd - Studies of Religion 2
2nd - Maths Extension One
3rd - Maths Extension 2
3rd - Biology
=4th - Chemistry
=8th - English Standard
(6 points)

Guess what order they were?
By your school's system you would assume - A, C, D, E=F, B, right?
Well, really, they were placed - A, D, B, E, F, then 3 more people, and then B.
And B was given our school's internal award for "2nd" (labelled the effort award) even though when we came back we were given award for 90+ (he didn't get an award) and the DUX award was given out.
So your school's system might not be flawed for first but might for like top 5.
(Although, at our school in 2009 some guy was given the internal first award and then the DUX was the guy who got the effort award (he was DUX by >0.5 and then 2nd was some random guy who came first in English standard and General maths and then top 5 everything else, and then the guy who came internally first was like 2 whole points below him even though the DUX's internals would've brought him up (they did most of the same subjects))).

So like, they should just do it on ATAR because people do FREAK THE FUCK OUT during exams, and some of the in-school marking can be swayed by teachers that don't want to look like they have a shit class.

We need more details about student C. A rank in English should always be given because it always counts.

I'm actually only in Prelim lol. Student B has two 3rd places in Maths Adv and Maths Ext 1 and Student C has a 4th in Adv English. And yes it should say Maths Extension 1 for Student A. It's also interesting to see who would get the highest ATAR. Thanks guys :D

We really don't want it to be Student C so if it isn't C I'm fine because A is my really close friend and B is me :D We just want to kick C off the podium because she has got it every single year (except for last year when the two of us tied for Dux).

My gut is by our school's system C won't get it but A and B could tie for first, with maybe B having the edge due to more 1st places. Last year at our school the same students B and C got the following awards and tied for dux:Student B-
1st in History
1st in Geography
1st in IST
2nd in English
2nd in Science
2nd in Agriculture

Student C-
1st in Science
1st in Health
2nd in Maths
2nd in Marine Studies
2nd in History
2nd in Geography
2nd in PE
=2nd in Textiles Design

I just find this interesting so much appreciated.

So you never know.

And wtf $1000 for dux. That's insane! I'll just get $120 in book vouchers lol. Dammit that school is lucky!
