Say someone coming 1st internally at school A (ranked 1st)
And someone coming 1st internally at school A (ranked 250th)

They both get the same raw mark in externals lets say 96. and 96 was the highest mark.

Who would get a state rank?

Both would be tied.

Both will get the state rank ??

But I think the person from rank 1 school will get a higher HSC mark.

in most cases it would be called a tie
but for say mx1 they might compare results in 2u and rule based on that.

And if they are doing MX1 and MX2 (ie. not needing to sit the 2u test)?

There may be other factors involved in their calculations which we don't know of. On face value, they both should come first.

Perhaps the results of the cohort matters???

School with rank 1 will be most of the students smashing the exam while the 250 ranked might not

Rank 1 student will get state rank. The person ranked 250th External mark will be affected by his cohort, because to be rank one in a rank 250 school is MUCH easier than a rank one at the number one school. They can test this out by seeing the average external hsc exam mark of each school. I am 100percent certain rank one school will have a higher average then rank 250 school.

So if they are genuinely "smart" and lives out in Dubbo (example), and can't afford to go to James Ruse or where ever alike, how can you discriminate between the two? Coming first in a rank 250 school is easier than a rank 1 school, is completely irrelevant. They have gotten the equal first mark in the state for the external exams; HSC, ie. they deserve to be ranked 1st in their school.

Both get 96 internally, which means they will get 96 overall. School rank has no effect.
