Say your worst 2 units were biology and economics (all other 4 subjects/8 units you get a band 6) and you both got 87 in them (and you did 12 units for the HSC and your subjects were english advanced, hospitality, legal studies, business studies, biology and economics), which one would count to your ATAR and which wouldn't

It depends on the ATAR scaling each year but I would probably say Economics would be counted whilst Biology wouldn't, in saying this, there is still the chance that a lower scaling subject e.g. Hospitality wouldn't count.

From 2000 to 2015, the below list of commonly chosen subjects have experienced consistently strong scaling:

  • English Advanced
  • Economics
  • Modern History
  • All mathematics except general maths
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
How you know this? Wot about languages?

2U maths doesnt scale that high. It's only average

Also if English Advanced has strong scaling why doesn't English Extension 1 or 2?

Why isn't extension history on the list?

Yeah 2U maths is average.
English Ext. 1 & 2 are strong scaling too.
Ext. history ain't on the list because it's not a commonly chosen subject but it is strong scaling.

Languages are strong scaling.

The list includes commonly chosen subjects that have strong scaling.
Like 1800 kids sit extension history but 1600 kids sit EE2

English advanced and Standard SCALE exactly the same. They have different ALIGNING but the SCALING is the same.

That depends on scaling. Generally, your worst two subjects don't count if you have four subjects that can sufficiently make up the ATAR.
