How do you find the oblique asymptote for this without long division?

Have you tried splitting the fraction, so you get:
y = x + 1/x?

and if you take limits, y=x is OA

Hmm after splitting how do you get limits? do u mean divide all things by x?

$y = \dfrac{x^2+1}{x} = \dfrac{x^2}{x} + \dfrac{1}{x} = x + \dfrac{1}{x} \\ x\to \infty, y \to x \therefore y=x $ is an (oblique) asymptote.$$
