Morning.

Right now i have

math ext 1
adv eng
physics
biology
pdhpe
SOR 1

but nextyear i want to have 4U Math towards my atar.

The thing is is that, I want to drop biology and keep 4U math , adv eng, physics and pdhpe but don't know if this is the right move.
I like the biology topics once it hits year 12 but I have lost motivation to try for the subject due to competition and how memorising it is compared to pdhpe a more straightforward simple subject.

Note I cannot drop sor 1 so I would have 11 subjects at least for ATAR so can someone gie me advice on what to do
should I keep bio or pdhpe i genuiekly enjoy pdhpe.

Do you like physics? If you like the yr 12 bio content but are worried bc of the competition, don't worry about that. If you enjoy the content, you will want to study and learn.

the bio content in year 12 is so much better BUT it can get quite repetitive- this makes tests a little easier because every module is very interlinked. there's only 1 prac in the syllabus (aside from modelling) in year 12 though, so it can get boring for some.

so then say hypothetically i would keep 13 units, is that too much?

13 units is a lot considering that only 10 will get counted. It's up to you but think about all the extra time u will have to give to those 3 units that could be used for something else.
what I did before dropping a subject was went through possible combos on an atar calculator to weigh up the options and if it would improve my atar or not (keep in mind atar calcs aren't the most accurate but they can help)
I also looked at the band 6s at my school for my subjects, and what I wanted to drop my school hadn't gotten a band 6 in years lol so I didn't want to take any chances.
btw you might wanna wait till you do prelims to decide

you could also keep 13 units for a few weeks into year 12, for me this was the best way to go so I could get a better understanding of what I wanted to drop/add/keep.

would u say atar calculators work I have been experimenting with them and the pdhpe combination would come out higher if I was being realistic with the marks. As for 13 units I'm kinda on edge but I will wait for prelims to settle study habits and stuff.

I reckon if it’s a battle for Bio or PDH you should honestly go with the subject you feel more comfortable with and that you reckon is more straightforward and makes your life easier, which in this case seems to very much so be PDH. Personally from someone like me who does Bio I can understand how annoying it is to memorise everything but don’t fear about competition since you should just block everyone out and focus on your weaknesses and strengths.

I personally can't say if they work because I haven't done my hsc yet, I use them to mainly check scaling of my subjects. The values you are putting in are a rough estimate (you don't know what your moderated hsc marks would be, how similar your school's assessment marks are to your actual hsc exam etc). Keep in mind scaling doesn't matter as much when you're in the mid 90s-100 mark range in most subjects but I'm pretty sure bio scales better than pdhpe.
Also I know for some degrees you might need at least one science (medicine at 1 or 2 unis I think) so check up on any degrees you're interested in and their prerequisites.
You should pick whatever subject you feel more confident in doing, because year 12 is so much about stamina, motivation and longevity, doing subjects you don't like can at times lead to a lack of motivation which could lower your marks. Again, for now focus on prelims as they'll help you work out your strengths and weaknesses.

HI,, im a new year 12 student and study BIOLOGY, MATHS ADV, MATHS EXT 1, VISUAL ARTS, PDHPE AND STANDARD ENGLISH.

recently i picked up ext 2 maths and wish to drop biology, visual arts or pdhpe. Biology is so content heavy and kind of hard to understand sometimes, but for my prelims i got 70%, meanwhile in Pdhpe, which i thought i enjoyed, i ended getting a prelim result of 50%, which really unmotivated me to keep pdhpe. elsewise, for visual arts, i really dont want to burden myself with a major project.

so which subjects in the three should i drop???

Hmm which one do you like more, visual arts or PDHPE?
i like pdhpe, but i always end with bad results loll
meanwhile visual art's essays and questions are so hard to answer and that goes the same for bio

I don’t think you should drop bio, definitely not. 70% although it may not be the ideal mark to most people there’s always room for improvement. However I’d say one of the more important reasons to keep bio is, assuming you’ll go to university, the skills you learn in Bio may be transferable to a science-based uni degree (unless you’re majoring in Physics of course). Since you like PDHPE, despite the mark for prelims I reckon you should keep that. Bio and PDH cross over to a certain degree whereas art has nothing to do with both. Also if you’re looking at doing a uni degree like health science, doing both bio and PDHPE can give you a slight advantage. You’re better off dropping art and looking back at your prelim results and study habits in year 11 and considering what you can do to improve for year 12 to ensure you get those desirable marks. It doesn’t necessarily have to even be band 6’s as long as it’s something you think is achievable, but preferably band 6’s would be nice.
Edit: PDH can also be useful and practical in the real world, painting squares and learning about Van Gogh’s artwork is not useful! (This opinion is career based but anyway)

Nah don’t let the stress get to you! It’s fine you got this, year 12, one more year and then you’re out. Keep reminding yourself that 😌
