if ur parents earn over a certain amount p.a, you can not get youth allowance until you qualify as "independent" (AKA you finished year 12 1.5 years ago or longer)

centerlink is not in my good books atm...
as far as what stuff u need - jus walk into ur centerlink office and ask for youth allowance forms...i had to do a means test aswell cos my parents are self-employed...but here is a lil bit of advice...everytime u fill in one of their million page forms - PHOTOCOPY IT!!! cos chances are that if u are rejected on what ever grounds centerlink will file ur claim and ask u to fill in new forms - it is so much easier to just copy from ur last one...

i dont understand the independance part tho - the guy told me that i had to earn 17 thous-ish over 18 mnts from the time i left school because by looking at my partents income id get nothing from the tight ass government...so from what he told me u have to support urself for 18months aswel as earn x amount of $$...there is a box in the claim form on the "are u independant" page that says sumthing like "it is inappropriate for you to live at home" well...it is...i cant go to armidale every day from home...its like 4.5 hrs away - but my friendly lil centrelink man basically said that icould live at home because it is a stable environment and that question wasnt refering to my future education...wtf!!! if u have any idea wat the hell i have to do to convince them i have to leave home please share!!

also, another bit of advice - if ur in a town/suburb where the centrelink people arent familiar with the idea of uni...attempt to lodge ur claim where they are "uni friendly"...if that makes sense... ;)

grrr i hate when people grizzle that they dont get youth allowance and their parents own over the thresh hold. GET OVER IT. you are obviously a lot more well off than the people who get it + therefore ur parents can afford it. y should the gov pay for u.... I understand if parents are not working for preventable reasons then they should be made to work but as for the rest with other circumstances. U people should try and live a week in their shoes and see what its like.
it just annoys me a lot.

well for example in my circumstance my parents just bought a house and are way over the weekly budget, so they have absolutly no money to give me. now i am in uni and need money for books, fees etc. So dont say just cuase someones parents get alot of money they have enough to pay . PErsonally i have no money at all , and need it for things apart from going out.

It's not hard. You CAN get youth allowance if your parents earn too much (I very quickly skimmed through this so someone may have already said this, so my apologies if I'm stealing anyone's thunder here); you have to earn 75% of what's called the Commonwealth Award Wage in an 18 month period. For me that was $16536, but it goes up each year. How much you have to earn depends on either when you leave school or when the 18 month period is or something.

Call centrelink, ask for their youth allowance department if you've got questions. They're really friendly (and should bloody well better be by the time you've waited through their hold music! :D), and know their stuff.

Step 1: Find out how you can be eligible (independence, parental means tests, etc): work out what conditions you need to meet.
Step 2: Work out roughly when you'll mee those.
Step 3: The instant you meet them, file an "intent to claim" by calling them up and telling them you'd like to do so. They'll then send you the paperwork you need to fill in. I kept getting sent the wrong paperwork, so it's probably easier to just print it off their website.
Step 4: Take it in to centrelink, wait the month (so I'm told) for them to process your application. If you're successful, they'll pay you YA from the date you filed your intent to claim. If not, well, work out why and try again.

ALSO, I've been told by the friendly people at the YA hotline thing to file for a health card, too (it's included in the paperwork you get when signing up) because it can get you a few extra benefits.. again, if you're eligible.

Really it's not too hard, but I'm resisting making a pun on your nickname, Too Lazy... ;)

i disagre - jus because my parents earn a certain amount per year doesnt mean that they can afford to send me away plus help me out with stuff i need for uni AND support my brother...my parents work their ass' off to help me and it gets to a certain point where i feel bad that they have to continue to "give"...i cant pay my way thro uni on my own and i dont see why people who defer with the intention to gain YA dont piss u off either...i have worked full time since the end of HSC and have no intention to bludge my way thro uni - my YA would pay for shit i need and not jus be pissed up the wall...thats all....people who see things in black and white annoy me...

In that way ie having to pay for uni the gov should help quite a bit BUT i just know examples of people whos parents can support them several times over and DO and they still complain that everything is expensive and that they should be given YA. the means test is a way to regulate the system.

i'm obviously not goiing to win my argument so i give up. good luck to you all on the ya front. i hope you get it

I can't get it cos I;m doing uni part time. I'm thinking maybe I should do full-time, just so I can get the youth allowance ... but it's sooooooooo much extra work that I don't want. ... . . . .

I'm assuming you can also just rock up to a branch and do the 'claiming' and filling of forms all in one go..eh?
