If you sketched the graph then you would see that you take the volume of the cylinder from x=0 to x=1 and minus the volume of the "bowl" under the y=sqrt(x)+1 curve to find the shaded volume.

From my own experience, I wouldn't recommend printing them because it's a waste of paper and sometimes you don't pay as much attention but as stated above, I guess it differs for each person. I remember in 1st year physics, my thermal physics lecturer printed out the lecture notes for everyone...

if you're going to miss lectures, miss the ones which have notes and recordings on blackboard or else you'll have no idea what's going on and you have to REMEMBER to catch up eventually which some people forget to do...
