Definetly quality over quantity. My 40 minute essays are always a bit under 1000 words which fills one writing booklet. I always get 14/15 (and 19/20 for modules) I find thats all i can write in 40 minutes. If you can write more, go for it. But it is possible to get full marks with about 1000...
