It does look like though that you do 12 units, so while you definitely want to strive for the best marks possible in all your subjects, you do have a subject which ultimately won't be counted. It does sound like at the moment that subject not counting may be history, but who am I to say

I'd say for maths what I used to do was to circle my final answer at the end, just so it stood out. Especially in questions which require lots of working out, it can be quite difficult for the marker if the answer is within the working out and isn't distinct.

Well, both but in different ways. Your HSC mark is comprised of 50% the examination mark (mark in HSC exam) + 50% assessment mark (internal marks). I guess then as a subsequent result, the higher your assessment marks, the higher your HSC mark, which means the higher ATAR you can get

I agree, big bad writing is much easier to read than small bad writing, put quite bluntly. That said, writing big definitely takes longer and so may reduce the number of words that can be written (on a technicality).

I thought apart from black pen, nothing else is allowed on the writing booklet as it mentions it on the front page. If that were the case, I would definitely just 'underline' like someone else mentioned above.
