    fire at the uni

yeah, I saw it. Saw it around 11am, didn't look like it was going to be put out anytime soon, so I didn't hang around to watch as I had a presentation to prepare for. The trees seemed to be in the way of getting the water up, but they only had one hose on it when I was there, with a few...

The scaling varies from year to year, the scaling this year (like every year) will depend on how well the course canditature does in biology and other subjects they are studying for their HSC.

    URGENT - scaling/capping - never b4 seen :)

There is no 'capping' of subjects, the possible score that a student can attain in any subject is 100 - but to do so, a student must fufil the requirements. I think you may be confused with scaling however, which is determined by the course canditature and naturally varies from year to year...

    Is It possible for

Will depend on how well the students in front of your mate do. If they peform at high 90 UAI level and he does as well in the exam, then it's possible... but, is it likely? Probably not, unless it's one of the better peforming schools in the HSC.

    Extra UAI points....is this right?

Yeah, it's true extra UAI points can be granted. Particularly through EAS (Educational Access Scheme). I don't know how many points rural students receive. Newcastle Uni was 4 points for local students, but I don't know anymore.

    Low Mathematics Mark & Scaling?

I know of some incredibly stupid/lazy people who ended up with 50s and 60s for their HSC marks when there is no way they would have come anywhere near passing exams. I got the impression if a student makes an effort in the exam, they'll end up with a mark > 50.

    quick UAI question

Nobody knows for certain, they can only guess. The cut offs are determined by the number of places available. They originally set it at 100, then move it down until they fill up x places, which then becomes the cut off. At a guess, most likely higher than what it was this year (2004), as...

i know this has prob been asked a million times...

All subjects 'scale down', the better subjects just not as much as other subjects. However, a high band 5 to band 6 means you probably have a decent scaled mark for the subjects you listed above.

Working out aligned mark for SAM

No one can really guess aligned marks. They vary from year to year with the board and there seems to be no consistency. Being in the upper ranks for your school will result in good moderated asessment marks, leaving the exam mark (up to you) to achieve a good HSC mark. It also gives you space...
