as far as i know, a number representing 0/0 cant exist. so, i presume its a "no solution"

Anything divided by zero is either indeterminate or infinite, depending on the context. Generally, for 0/0 you say indeterminate, for anything else divided by zero you say infinite.

Example: 5/0.
How many zeroes can you fit into 5? An infinite number.
.'. 5/0 = infinity

It will never be equal to 0 or 1. :)

true laz, but on the other hand, 0 divided by anything is equal to 0. eg : 0/5 = 0.
and, a number divided by the same number is 1 !! eg : 5/5 = 1

so ....... the Q is a :apig:

yeah 0/0 is an indefinite... hmm that doesnt sound right...
umm its undefined.. yeah thats better - its undefined.

thats what i thought.

i understand that anything other than zero divided by zero is infinite, but why wouldn't 0/0 be 1? isn't it the same logics:confused:

here is what i think:

if 0 divides x (0/x)..then the answer is a number (obviously zero)
but if x=0 then the answer is undefined.....regardless of what the value the numerator is

hence, 0/0 would definitely be undefined

I've found the following solution... and it appears I should have said 'indeterminate' rather than 'undefined'. Sorry. :)

Let's consider a different example:

What is 6/2?

Well, by reducing, we get 6/2=3. How do we know that is true? We can multiply 3 by 2 to get 6: 3*2=6. Now, let's apply that back to the original question.

If we look at 0/0, what times zero gives us zero?

0*0=0, therefore 0/0=0
0*1=0, therefore 0/0=1
0*2=0, therefore 0/0=2

... and on and on to the point that any number can satisfy the question:
What is 0/0?

Now, is it undefined? Let's take a look at that.

6/0=undefined. Why? The answer is in the question we answered before. What multiplied by zero gives 6? The answer is, we don't know. There is nothing defined to give us the number zero.

0/0 cannot be undefined because there are plenty of definitions for what it gives. It must therefore be indeterminate.

Teacher made us think about it in year 7. In the end, it came down the what Lazarus said...but then, in primary school we learn that zero isn't a number, only a placeholder? Like, it's only there to hold off the some numbers taking other numbers places. Hehe, doesn't sound right...

There is a special application of 0:

Any positive number = 0 * infinity

Hey it works; hence any positive real divided by 0 is infinity, any negative real divided by 0 is infinity...

But what is 0/0 = ?

Well by logic it must equal all the numbers between infinity and negative infinity...

Wow, logic brought to illogic. (or not)

Squrt[36] is the square root of 36, in this case the positive root. i.e. 6

proof why 1+1 = 0 .. if dividing by 0 is allowed

A=1
B=1

A^2 -B^2=0
(A-B)(A+B)=0
divide by A-B-> dividing by 0

A+B=0
therefore 1+1 =0

why not -6?
