hey guyz! just wondering if anyone wants 2 swap stuff on any of these topics - cold war is quite broad im finding...if any1 has any questions they think are possible for this years HSC please post them on this thread - especially on cold war!
also, i dont no if anyone else has noticed, but with germany, they seem to be revolving around the key concepts in past questions....so im thinking possibly totalitarianism, or nationalism.

My teacher seems to think it's about time that a question about women or youth popped up in Germany, so that's something else to think about. I don't think they will ask a question on jews again, haven't they asked 2 of them already?

Yeah, I reckon for Germany one of the qns will incorporate a totalitarianism feature....e.g.

+Assess the significance of Adolf Hitler in creating a totalitarian state from 1928 to 1939.

+ Explain the role of propaganda and terror in creating a totalitarian state from 1936 to 1945.

They love to include a Key concept and a feature, so i reckon that is likely.

For Cold War, I am thinking a detente essay is due, maybe

+Assess the significance of superpower rivalry in Africa and the mIddle East in the demise of detente from 1974 to 1980

+Assess the extent to which detente was a genuine improvement in relations between communism and capitalism.

maybe an end of the CW qn,

+ Explain Gorbachev's role in the end of the CW

what would u write about for these 2?

+Assess the significance of Adolf Hitler in creating a totalitarian state from 1928 to 1939.

what does it mean by the significance? i know what assess means, but what does it what me to make a decsion on?

+ Explain the role of propaganda and terror in creating a totalitarian state from 1936 to 1945.

ok so here i would discuss
- the SA-SS-Gestapo in frighting the population into submission
- use of propagande in new means, film, radio etc
-the state owned film, radio and newspaper industrys
what else?

okay, i would tackle them terror then propaganda,

Terror - destoyed resistance
+ public executions (scholl siblings, stauffenberg conspirators, eidwlweiss pirates, etc) demonstrated the price of dissent
- Night and For Decree of 1941 led to disappearances which created a climate of fear etc
So, terror managed to maintain outward conformity and suppress/remove resistance. Talk about how terror meant that no major resistance groups formed b/c they knew that a large group was an easier target, thus no co-ordinated opp to the NSDAP/

Propaganda
+ created conformity and hopes
- enforce strict aryan ideals through p'ganda, nazi community organisations, made the German pop fearful of being different
- created complicit support b/c they beliebed inferiority of jews, etc for the holocaust (well, Goldhagen would say so..."Hitler's willing Exectioners"
- support for the NSDAP as the paternalism progs were pushed in prop (Eintopf, Beauty thru Labour, etc)
+ Enforced/created the Fuhrermyth thru Riefenstahl etc
- According to Kershaw, belief in Hitler the individual was far more significant than the actual ideas of Nazism in creating popular support
+ Prop magnified fears
- Historian Bessel focuses on the reporting of conflict that confirmed the racial ideas underlying Nazism, how the Slavs did live in a squalor (they were 'untermenschen' i..e subhuman), that the Slavs were barbarian, etc. Bessel calls the war inthe East one of "racial plunder"
- wrt to the Western Front, atrocity stories of the UK/France/US were reported from DDay (June 1944?) onwards. Frightened them with the prospect of a 2nd 'versailles'.

TO acually assess you need to talk about how prop/terror failed to create a conforming society, it failed to

+ Create genuine support
- Terror left ppl desensitised, unproductive, talk about the reports indicating deliberate sabotage, strikes, go slows, etc
+ Propaganda failed increasingly throughout the war
- the radicalisation of Nazi schemes to deal with the JEWish question, etc meant more and more ppl disagreed on the basis of principles (according to historian Fest)
- Goebbels prop was mistrusted with the 2nd front of 1944, allied bombing campaigns which destroyed the glamour of war, the failure of the V2 to be delivered in time, etc.

I can't be bothered doing the 2nd one....

I did the propaganda question in my trial. The most important thing to say (which i ingeniously left out!) is that terror and propaganda did not work alone and that as the effect of propaganda decreased as the war progessed, the use of terror was increased.

The other choice in my trial was about totalitarianism.

nope I can assure you they haven't taken anything out of the syllabus and they certainly don't do it mid year. There hasn't been a question asked on Weimar yet, so Im hoping there is one in the exam

i agree, they havent takin it out of the syllabus!! its in there! by the way, yeah it is significant to the rise of Hitler - such as the Weimar republics failure increased Hitler's rise to power - but that wasn't the only reasons - so the period from 1918-33 is very important not only in the rise of Hitler, but in the role of the army and miilitary, and you can use all you know about the republics failure in other questions - dont just learn it in reference to Hitler -because thats only partial!
and i agree - i think that a Weimar question is very likeley - as one hasnt come up yet - the only reference to that time period has been the rise of Hitler...so i think that we are due for a Weimar republic ques!
