I think most people have a problem with the fact that you're already all members of the Chinese Society, and instead of making an extra meeting in it, you go out and create your own society targeted at Shanghainese people (which people from other parts of China - especially those parts not so advanced - would obviously see as being elitist -even if that's not your intention).Originally posted by rukawasan
pretending to be so farqin righteous...
all we're doing is bringing ppl together to know each other better... this dosnt mean we're discriminating against anyone... we still support the chinese society... in fact i attend 2 chinese society events a week...
if u think we're discriminating then fine... but dont diss SSS...
why are there clubs/societies/associations?
why are there sports clubs then... why dont ppl just turn up and play sport together...
why is there a hiphop club and a jazz club... why cant ppl all turn up and listen to music...
why are there differetn faculties... why dont ppl just all turn up and learn...
This made me laugh. I'm from Qiaozhen. Do you know where that is? A city in Shanghai So don't bother playing the racial misunderstanding card with me. In fact, I've lived most of my life here, and only came to Aus during early high school. Do I feel affiliation? I sure do, and a strong one. Do I wanna join this society? No, cos it looks like it segregates, and the Shanghainese already have a certain perception from other Chinese who aren't as "well off" as many of us are, and then you put in place a society which will emphasise this difference.Originally posted by rukawasan
we're not trying to discriminate against anyone... its u guys who are discriminating... whats wrong with trying to get all the ppl who come from ur home city together... fine... if u've been living in australia all ur life... then its obvious u'll feel no affiliation to where ur rents came from... but some of us havent lived here all our life... so excuse us if we feel a lil affiliation to shanghai...
Yes redslert, very sus. "Miserychick" came out of nowhere and then is very knowledgeable - posts once and leaves. I should ask one of the mods to do an IP match searchOriginally posted by Miserychick

farq guys... can u take this seriously... if u wanna farq round go to non-school
Yeh, apart from the fact that ChinSoc doesn't (and won't) support your movement. It was Jenny from ChinSoc (if you didn't know, one of the main people who run it) who told me about you starting a Shang Society.Originally posted by rukawasan
like i keep reminding u im stil a member of the ChinSoc... and i regularly attend their events... u noe wot... if if i try to organise a meet via ChinSoc targeted at Shang students then that would really be elitist cos im discriminating non-shang members of ChinSoc...
UNSW HKSS was around before it became part of China again. So it's your point that's absurdOriginally posted by rukawasan
from ur reasoning then HKSS is elitist as well, cos they're a city of China too? thats just absurd...
I'm not denying it - it would be good to meet other "Shangs". It's just that you even said yourself if you did it through ChinSoc it would be elitist, but outside, it wouldn't. I think doing it behind ChinSoc's back (or at least without their backing), is just as much "elitist".Originally posted by rukawasan
and dude... ur not the only one who originally came from shanghai and feel a strong affiliation to it... others feel that too...
and denying them a chance to meet up and affirm that affiliation just cos some ppl'll think we're elitist is just absurd
Look it's just a reputation. I'm Shang myself, and I'm already sick of the Shangs who act as though they are better than other Chinese (I'm NOT directing this to anyone in this thread). I think introducing Shang-interest groups within ChinSoc is a good idea, so then other Chinese members can get to know more about Shanghai.Originally posted by Goban
yeah shangs have a reputation among other chinese... but are u saying that it's becoz shangs are more "well off" that others are "jealous"
ZeldaSoc!Originally posted by Goban
edit: if i didn't love zelda, i'd flame yo lil ass off
There is a difference between badmouthing and questioning. I'm ready to have my views changed.Originally posted by mraverage
i think everyone is entitled to what they think. put it this way, link, if you aren't interested in this society then dont join it- you are entitlted to that. But please dont come around badmouthing the intentions of the society.
I don't think they intended it to be a group that would discriminate, I just think that's the way a lot of non-Shang Chinese people will see it, especially due to the way in which Shanghai is already seen as the "rich" area of China. This society isn't a subset of ChinSoc - they're going it alone.Originally posted by mraverage
i doubt this is a society to discriminate as ruka has already said. if you dont want to get involved, dont. if you do, come and help the society out and then decide the values of the club
As I said, HKSS in it's original form was around before China took back Hong Kong.Originally posted by Shawny
wat they gonna do? lodge a protest? on wat grounds?
Oh coz shangs are not allowed but honkies are?
