The westie card was played in response to a concern that students in the Western suburbs would have to travel back through Redfern station anyway. I believe that the extra station is a worthwhile tradeoff, especially since students who live far enough away can make use of the country services that do not stop at Redfern station.

Central station itself is far more secure than Redfern station, but I cannot say the same about the journey to either station. Hence the security bus. During peak hours, the security bus service will continue to run to Redfern. During these hours, students have safety in numbers, and the risk of attack is greatly diminished. But during off-peak hours, I strongly feel that it is a sensible precaution to run services to a far more secure station.
