This idea of someone getting 99.95 having below average social skills or hand-eye coordination is a terribly inaccurate stereotype. A lot of people I knew in uni who got 99+ or HD averages were highly social and generally well rounded. In my cohort for example, the president of the USyd Science...

HSC Perm/Comb + Binomial Past Papers

Easier said than done. A lot of the harder questions mix multiple topics into one question.

HSC Perm/Comb + Binomial Past Papers

Last year’s HSC question covering those topics would be a good place to start, if you haven’t seen it already lol. There are also BoS trials in the Resources section if you want some particularly challenging problems.

    Econometrics or Stats

Whilst there is overlap, Econometrics is very application focused (mainly in commercial contexts) whereas Statistics leans more on the theory (and applies more broadly beyond commerce). A more blunt way to put it is that in Econometrics you’ll be plugging numbers into random formulas that are...

    Moderator application form

Bump! With some moderators retiring, we are now on the lookout for new people to join our team. The same application questions apply as per the original post. If you are interested in becoming a moderator, we encourage you to submit an application by the 28th of February.

Wondering if limits for trig functions (small angles) is in the new syllabus ?

You should have encountered it when establishing the derivatives of sin x and cos x. I don’t think you are expected to recall it outright but perhaps you could be asked to prove it in a guided derivation.

Recovering from a very bad result.

I think the intent is that students are not overly taught to do HSC style exams in Year 12 because that would be a very narrow way to learn and assess a subject, not to mention it unfairly favours those who just rote learn the theory. For example, in Chemistry you shouldn’t be just learning how...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

gg now parts of WA going into lockdown... Now just about every state except TAS and the territories has had some version of a second lockdown

Pretty much this. Also, chances are one or more state ranked students actually lost just 1 mark somewhere but still got 100/100 aligned as they see it rounded.

    Holiday Reflection

Well I would like to see concrete proof of that. It is one thing to think you got full marks in the exam, it is another to actually receive that (e.g. you might have missed something in your working which you thought was fine - I see this marking BoS trials all the time). The other factor to...

Then the other two criteria applies as shown (i.e. going back to the raw exam marks and moderated marks, failing that then go to similar courses in same subject area) This is not made explicit in NESA's website, but I believe Ext1 marks are considered to differentiate students in Ext2. Not sure...

    Holiday Reflection

lol no, it's to do with the decimal places of the aligned marks (from NESA) The decimal places from the aligned marks arise from the interpolation between the band cut-offs. For example if 50/70 aligns to 90/100 then a mark of 69/70 aligns to 99.5/100 and a mark of 70/70 aligns to 100/100...

    2nd order recursion

Yeah, but it’s not for everyone. To really understand stats, you need to see the world in shades of grey (i.e. in relative uncertainties and imperfections) rather than in black/white like you do in maths (i.e. absolute certainties and perfection). If you struggle to have that perspective, then...

    2nd order recursion

None of us who write the BoS trials are actual mathematicians lol. The only commonality is that we all have studied or are currently studying Maths/Stats at uni. Also, we all have different topic strengths, for example I lean towards applied/stats and others lean more towards the pure side.

    2nd order recursion

There is a team of us who come up with question ideas. I’m mainly responsible for putting those ideas onto the paper itself in a HSC-friendly format and overseeing the process.

    2nd order recursion

Yeah that was the highest ever mark in a BoS trial. However, the guy didn't state rank in the HSC iirc

Easy to get Attacked at 5am?

Redfern has gentrified heaps in the past decade (similarly the case for a lot of western suburbs). Not to say those problems don't exist anymore but they're certainly far less prevalent.

Easy to get Attacked at 5am?

Judging by your post it looks like you’re not going to change your routine depending on the answer though? If so, then the real consideration should be what to do in the unlikely event of it happening, not weighing up the chances of it happening.
