The sample answer has a typo in that they wrote (x-4) instead of (4-x) so the actual result is the negative of what you see. Also, the sample answer only evaluates 2I but doesn't finish it off to evaluate I - so the last line is also double the actual answer in magnitude.

Pretty much echoing what is said above. The BoS trials are specifically designed for people who want more practice on the harder HSC questions. This mainly because most trial papers out there (with the exception of a small few) have boring repetitive questions everyone has seen before.

The resisted SHM question given there was a special case where the roots of the characteristic polynomial were equal. This lends itself to a more 'first principles' approach to solving it in a nice way without calling upon any ODE specific theory.

If you must derive it, use the fact that acceleration is equal to \dfrac{d}{dx}\left(\dfrac{v^2}{2}\right)

I would suggest people load past trial papers onto our Notes and Resources section so they last long after this thread disappears. Also be mindful you’re not breaking any copyright laws, especially if the papers come from a private company.
