I would suggest doing each side separately but given that it is an induction question it seems like it is asking you to handle the two sided inequality at once

To be fair 'reverse quotient rule' isn't actually a thing. It's more of a trickier 'inspection' approach of the integration by parts method.

When -2 < x < 2 then |x - 2| = -(x - 2) (since x - 2 < 0) and |x + 4| = x + 4 so you can work out f(x) from there

Dude you think that's a big deal look at the very first question of Extension 1 HSC 2005 and HSC 2006. Same question, different mark values.

Normally the HSC questions are designed such that these situations don't happen.
