I've never understood the left's position on VSU/CSU. They constantly complain about the size of HECS debts and student poverty, yet it's apparently okay to increase that debt through compulsory fees. I would have expected them to argue that the government should directly fund these services.

There is no exception in the Act preventing this and it'll be up to universities as to whom the fee is levied on. This gives you some idea of their thinking though:
