    Medical Science Content

First year biology is similar to HSC biology. First year chem is nothing like the HSC, much, much harder - Uni chem involves a lot of calculations.

    difference between specialisation & differentiation

In general biological terminology, differentiation and specialisation is the same. Differentiation of cells is the development of cells with specialised structure and function. e.g. muscle cells, nerve cells. B cells cannot differentiate into antibodies. B cells are already differentiated...

    Studying 2 undergraduate degrees

You can do a second undegred degree if you want. I know some people do an Optometry degree, then do a second science degree. So I'd say go for it!

    So BIOS1011.....

Yep, Pete' lecture in Viruses is pretty much 7-8 pages. And all his lecture follow the similar format of history, epidemiology, genome, pathogenesis. So for each virus you learn you need to know all these stuff. For the assessments, I don't know.. I just keep losing marks for no reason...but...

    Summer session?

BABS1201 is much better than BIOS1101. I think it will be good for you to do it. It's at least not boring :)

    general UNSW chit-chat

Completely agree with Rekkusu. Anyway, they are building the Lowry Cancer Building right in front of the BioScience and Med buildings, which means the Lawn is GONE! How sad... As if we have a lot of room at upper campus! [End Rant]

    Medical Science @ UNSW

You mean in the thesis defense? Pretty much, they want to knwo why you did what you did and what was your purpose and how will your findings affect your current research area. And of course they critique and challenge you as to why you use this experimental approach in your research over all...

Sorry guys, I don't know what the diagram for Q1 is about so I'm completely lost as to what you are arguing about. Same with the xylem/phloem one... and Q11. I thought Q4, the pine question was D, which prevent importantation of infected pines into Australia. For option C, while washing the...

    Honours research

No idea at the moment. I'm exhausted from doing that 80 pages thesis. I submitted in on friday after 2 days without sleep and 1 day without food... *sighs* Well, at the moment I have already submitted a paper for publication. It is in a review process and it takes for ever for them to get...

    So BIOS1011.....

Hmmm... Here are what I think (they are all relative to each others of course - and I try to to be bias base on the marks I got. hahaha) Pretty much group work for every course - you have to do presentations for every course you take (as a group). Viruses & Disease 7/10 group...

    Honours research

What you do in the Honours years depends on what degree you are doing. Honours can be integrated (e.g. Engineering) or can be "add-on" (B Arts, B Sc). Most people in non-Science degree usually don't do Honours. e.g. Commerce people. In this type of Honours, you do gathering informnation from...

    Plasma and Platelets

Plasma contains clotting factors as well. So both actually clot. Serum is the one without clotting factor! Technically, haemophilics required factor VIII, not platelets. :)

    Enzymes

Generally speaking, enzymes actually speed up reactions. However, you can say they also slow down reactions because other enzymes may convert "product" produced from one enzyme back into the "substrate". Does this make sense?

    Teachers

Best of luck to both of you. If you have the Howitt S&C textbook as well as the syllabus, you can't go wrong! Make sure you know everything in the syllabus.

    So BIOS1011.....

There are a lot to learn in Viruses and Disease (you learn about 2-4 viruses per lecture) and Pete ALWAYS have quizzes in the lecture... In my year he asked about history and epidemiology for one of the essay quetion in the final exam...but I mean who remember that sort of stuff.. I think the...

    So BIOS1011.....

yeah, BIOS1101 is like that. I think in the final exam, I guessed the last 30 questions (on the animal/hormone stuffs) because I just had NO idea which one to choose. Glad I never have to do that course again.
