The Search for Better Health Challenge Question 3 In this unit, you have developed a general understanding on genetic resistance in pathogens and how it helps in the spread of diseases. For example, drug resistance in bacteria - the development of superbugs. One of the mechanism behind...

The Search for Better Health Challenge Question!

Hi everyone. I will post a series of interesting questions which relates to and extend beyond the materials you have learned in the HSC Biology course. I hope all of you inspired biologists in the future, like me, will find this interest and think about how fansinating biological sciences can...

help--? why use potato in osmosis experiment

ange310. I think it's BOTH. You can't really have one and not the other. If you place a potato into highly concentrated salt water, water from the potato will move out, AND salt ions will diffuse into potato cells. The potato won't explode like you have suggested there.

    Bios1101

Oh and to all those who likes to disect things (non-human dissection), do BIOS2061, where you dissect a shark. But then again, you will have Beal as one of your lecturers, so it's a bit of a trade off.

    Bios1101

hahahaha. The rat smells 10 times worst than the toad. Personally, I enjoyed dissecting the rat better. But things are harder to find in the rat, especially the pancreas.

URGENT: Surface area to volume ratio

Yes it does. Although I have never done this course, I am assuming you are talking about solids that have a higher SA:V ratio will cool faster than solids with a lower SA:V ratio, right? Yes it is true.

    bacterial and fungal colonies

Hmmm.. bacterial colonies are generally smaller. And fungal colonies usually just spread all over your agar plate anyway so you just know it is fungi! You will see a a swarm more so than a "colony", that is, you probably won't see a round small dot. For yeast, which is a type of fungi, you...

UNSW (Biological Sciences) or UTS (Environmental Biology)

Thanks Nebuchanezzar. As to your question "does anyone at either of the uni's that i specified actually do one of the courses im looking into?" from mysterious00, many science students (from any schools or specicalisation) would have done biology in their first year, either as a core subject...

    ANU science vs UNSW science

I can't really say why you should choose UNSW over ANU. To my knowledge, both are good unis. I think UNSW Science has more majors, and is a more diverse place. Microbiology and Immunology at UNSW is fantastic too.

    easiest science major

I've heard Safety science is pretty bludgey, with mostly take-home final exams. But then again, to me, it's such a boring major I would find it difficult to learn and do well...

    experiment method

No.. don't do the numbering protocol. Your answer should be "An experiment was carried out using a patient's urine and was tested for..." You should not be using "we", or "I"

UNSW (Biological Sciences) or UTS (Environmental Biology)

well, UNSW Biological Sciences encompass many things, like genetics, botany, animal physiology, environmental science, ocean biology, invertebrate biology and marine science. So you have a lot of choices in terms of fields of specialisation. The teaching is pretty good. The classes are generally...
