    General help for 2021 Graduates

    This forum you’re posting in has exactly that. Post a question in the forum and there will likely be students around who can help. We also have a Notes and Resources section contributed by past students on the new syllabus material.

    Mistakes with trivial arithmetic

    Depends on the marking criteria. Sometimes there may be leniency for harder questions, but in most cases markers would need to consider whether it is fair to award the same marks for a student who makes that error versus one who does not make that error.

    Differential equations

    This is incorrect. See page 58 of the syllabus document.

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

    That is a sharp rebound for the US. This is what happens when the peak is too high (from reacting too late) that it takes forever to force it down and then people start running out of patience to live under the restrictions. They are basically screwed.

    Resources for New Syllabus (Trials)

    Some things to consider: Most of the material in the current syllabus also existed in the older one, so if you're looking for practice materials with the most topic coverage then past trial papers would be your best bet It shouldn't be a case of choosing between past trial papers or new...

    My answer doesn't match the solution. What did I do wrong? (Binomial Probability)

    You’re missing cases where say A gets both basketball and swimming and B gets swimming but not basketball.

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

    Community transmission seems to have remained very low so far since the stage 1 relaxations in mid-May. The protests tomorrow will be the first real test of the virus’ undetected prevalence in mass gatherings (notwithstanding the shitshow that’s gonna unfold now that it’s deemed illegal).

    Logistic Differential equation question

    \dfrac{dt}{dN}\\=\dfrac{1}{kN(5-N)}\\=\dfrac{1}{5k}\left(\dfrac{1}{N}+\dfrac{1}{5-N}\right)\\t=\dfrac{1}{5k}\ln\left(\dfrac{N}{5-N}\right)+c\\e^{5k(t-c)}=\dfrac{N}{5-N}\\5e^{5k(t-c)}=N(1+e^{5k(t-c)})\\N=\dfrac{5e^{5k(t-c)}}{1+e^{5k(t-c)}}\\\\$Let $A=e^{-5kc}\\\\N=\dfrac{5Ae^{5kt}}{1+Ae^{5kt}}

    Roots of Unity question

    I think it's meant to say \cos\frac{\pi}{5}=\dfrac{1+\sqrt{5}}{4}

    Roots of Unity question

    When you equate the coefficients of z, you get the same result as (a)(iii) that is -2\cos\frac{2\pi}{5}-2\cos\frac{4\pi}{5}=1 Using double angles and supplementary angles this is equivalent to -2\left(2\cos^2\frac{\pi}{5}-1\right)+2\cos\frac{\pi}{5}=1 and the result follows...

    Bc. Sci (Maths and Stats) or Bc. Sci (Adv. Maths) when going into investment banking or finance?

    Depends on what you mean by "investment banking". If you mean it in the traditional sense then you likely won't be using much maths or stats because that is mostly just accounting and corporate finance. If on the other hand, you include aspects like securities trading or risk management then...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

    The media is reporting this as if the error was responsible for the over-projection, which makes no sense. It’s kinda conflating two different issues, one being the number of employees currently registered on the scheme was incorrectly reported and the other being Treasury’s initial estimate...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

    I think the reporting error is about the actual number who are currently on JobKeeper. The Treasurer claimed last week that around 6 million employees have actually signed up for it (which is in line with their budget projection). However, turns out the actual number actually wasn’t anywhere...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

    NSW just returned schools back to normal...now they’re allowing regional travel and restaurants to hold up to 50 people from 1st of June. That’s like 2-3 weeks earlier than what I was expecting. I think the state government is getting a bit too ambitious. Guess we’ll see what the case numbers...

    [Inverse Trig] Why does the solution only take into consideration 1 case?

    Since there are only numbers involved, when you plug this in your calculator there should only ever be one answer with this type of question (it's also a way to check if you have the right exact answer as well).

    [Inverse Trig] Why does the solution only take into consideration 1 case?

    The examples you provide are specific scenarios where the rationality of a denominator is important for purposes of the question. Usually this requirement would be made pretty clear in the question itself. However, if it’s a straight computation (like the original question above) where the...

    [Inverse Trig] Why does the solution only take into consideration 1 case?

    Yeah unfortunately some teachers make up their own extra pedantic criteria and take off marks for the most trivial things, which is inconsistent to how the HSC exams are marked. You just have to follow their rules for internal assessments. Generally speaking for computation questions, you can...
