    2019 and 2020 Trial Papers

If you have trial papers (provided they are not written by private companies such as CSSA or Independent) that you would like to share with the student community, please upload them on our Notes & Resources section. It will benefit the wider student community for years to come.

To all 2020-ers, can we exchange resources (exam papers, trials, etc) for subjects with new syllabi such as 3u and 4u Maths?

People with notes and past papers on new syllabus can upload them onto the resources section on this website, so everyone can access it.

    School rankings

School rankings are not used to calculate the ATAR itself. The only reason people mention school rankings for ATAR estimates is so we have a rough idea of what calibre the student might be statistically compared to the rest of the state.

    Still confused by the moderation

There are a lot of myths out there. Suggest having a read of NESA’s official explanation, which is consistent with what I have said: https://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/about-HSC/moderation

    Still confused by the moderation

It’s not exactly a one-to-one allocation of external marks like that. The gaps between the internal marks are largely preserved. So if there is a small gap between first and second in the internals then that gap remains small, regardless of what that gap looks like for externals. This is...

    true or false?

It’s false. An obvious counterexample is if there was a discontinuity/asymptote at the middle of the two turning points (e.g. y = x + 1/x).

    Reduction Formula Question

As a rule of thumb, if you see reduction formulae in the form: I_{n} + bI_{n-k} + c = 0 and if b is independent of n then it is likely that a simple addition approach would work. Integration by parts usually generates a recurrence of the original integral as well as a bunch of factors dependent...

    Compound Angle Formula Proof

If you look up the old HSC syllabus that just got phased out (section 5.7), it actually contains a proof for the compound angle formula.

    Conditional Probability Question Help

First question I would ask is what is meant by “16% failed both”? Is the population of students exactly the same in both Chemistry and Physics? If there are different students (i.e. people only doing one and not the other) it is not clear what that statement means.

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Update on this with latest data and that spike was huge in the US. About to exceed 4 million confirmed cases. I can't see how they are going to flatten that curve effectively, given that no one wants to lockdown. Closer to home and this second wave in Victoria is out of control. Not only is...

Why is -2a^x not exponential decay?

It needs that specific 'slide'-like shape to be called exponential decay (rapidly falling before flattening). With your example, the shape does the opposite (starts flat before dropping rapidly). Also, for future reference please post subject specific questions in subject specific forums rather...

how do you find the maximum distance of a trajectory?

Since it is about distance (from the origin) and not displacement, a good approach is to try to sketch the path of particle on the number line over time. Initially, it’s at x=7 and then it moves in the negative direction to x=-9 before it turns around and moves in the positive direction.

    Best ATAR Calculator

I don’t think there is necessarily a “best” ATAR calculator. Just because you get a close guess for one person in one year, that doesn’t mean it will be like that for everyone else in other years.
