Do CS students think that the quality of CS field in this university is decreasing?

You're missing the who point of going to uni. In my 3 years here I have chosen only the more challenging albeit the more substantial subjects. I didn't get HD's or D's for all of them but I sure as hell know when I graduate that I got the most out of my uni experience compared to those who took...

Do CS students think that the quality of CS field in this university is decreasing?

I think it's the quality of CS in Australia as a whole which has decreased. In many cases, universities don't even see the difference between IT and CS. The problem stems from the belief that anything that can't directly be used in the workplace is useless, mostly pertaining to theoretical...

CS final year undergraduate students pls come in!!

That subject looks more useless to me than organisation of programming languages (337). What I have learned is that generally IACT and IACT-like subjects can be learned by just reading a book and doesn't require much skill. 337 deals with different kinds of programming models. We've already...

    What comprises your degree?

How about a research-oriented career? My flatmate finished his CS degree from UOW in 2000. He now works for Canon Research and he actually does software development for printers. The printer his team is working on will come out in 2008. What else is more fun than getting access to cutting-edge...

CS final year undergraduate students pls come in!!

CSCI321 - 2nd part of the project CSCI322 - Systems Administration * DFS' class. * Seems to me like a continuation of CSCI204. UNIX is good. CSCI337 - Organisation of Programming Languages * Ian Piper's class. * More abstract topics on languages and CS in general. CSCI368 - Network...

    Master of IT

We used the book "Operating System Concepts" by Silberschatz. I guess that's all we studied...concepts. Does Comp Arch depend much on DSS? I also have never done any assembly. Which subject requires or has assembly in it?

    Master of IT

I'm currently a 3rd year computer science student at Wollongong Uni and I'm looking at doing the MIT program next year. I've noticed that the MIT program has both 3rd year and graduate-level UNSW subjects like Operating Systsms, Advanced OS, Comp Architecture, etc. I was wondering if anyone here...

    Paths to Ph.D's?

There is one other exception to this though this is *rarely* considered. You have to show them you are capable of research through published papers or inventions.

What do you want to do when you graduate?

Do a postgraduate degree and eventually get into research work in a networking or security company.

    Welcome NEW IT/Comp Sci section

UOW is starting to do this. In the past 5 years they have removed 2 subjects considered core by IEEE and ACM: computer organisation (CSCI131) and computer architecture (CSCI234). I have only seen 3 unis in Australia maintain the original CS curriculum: Curtin (WA), UNSW and Adelaide.

Some top unis only accept 1st class honours for entry to PhD programs.

Do you wish australia had Fraternities / Sororities?

An American fraternity, the Alpha Phi Omega, opened for the first time in Australia in the University of Wollongong campus this February 2005. The's an informal group of APO members (mostly immigrants from various countries with APO) in NSW who decided to formally introduce the fraternity to...

    Uni clubs?

It's a shame there are no fraternities in Australia.

    Usyd/ Monash/ Anu. Which One?

My follow-up 2c is. If you're coming here to spend a fortune, make sure it's worth it and think about it very very carefully. I'm not saying that getting a degree in Monash or USyd will not get you a job overseas, but from those who do look at degrees will recognise one from ANU.

    Enrolling into Uni

I've been enroling online since Feb 2003 at the University of Wollongong. I only had to show up in my first enrolment because we had our pictures taken for the uni ID, but after that I've never been to uni to enrol in any subjects. Our lab/tute scheds are all done online as well. I thought...

    Usyd/ Monash/ Anu. Which One?

Ruchir you are coming here as an international student, am I correct? If so then you will be paying a lot more than Australian students which means about $20,000 per year upfront (cash, no loads whatsoever for int'l students). Also you'd be paying for your living expenses unless you work. That...

    Anyone done INFO412?

Has anyone done INFO412 here? Is it any good? Difficult, easy? Thanks.

Usyd is the worst uni of them all.

I do not believe this is entirely true. Uni is for people who are willing to WORK and has demonstrated some form of ability. In this world, it's diligence that makes things happen.

How many subjects do you do?

Credit points are not the same on every uni. At UOW 6cp means 12 hours of study per week which *includes* formal lectures, labs, tutes and personal study. This means if you only have 2 hours lec and 1 hour tute then there should be more assignments/individual work assigned compared to some...
